Brown 2014 - ED applicants

@Adeyadi: I presume you’ve read Philip Pullman’s works?

Philip Pullman…ahhh. I thoroughly enjoyed His Dark Materials. Let’s discuss, shall we?

Typical anti-fantasy view. In terms of worldmaking, Tolkien is unsurpassed. As someone who’s studied some of the real myths and languages behind his works, his works are extraordinarily impressive and intricate.

@DC: Gladly, but it’s been a while since I read them sooooo I may be a bit iffy on the details :p

Tolkien is the father of all fantasy novels!!

I, too, read Twilight with an open mind. Actually, I REALLY wanted to like the books and I found myself making excuses for the (IMO) horrible, childlike writing. The character development is really sub-par, and the storyline is ridiculous. There ARE good vampire books out there, however, Twilight just strikes me as weird teen smut.

CC in general: Apologies for lack of Brunonia yesterday. I was barn-sitting all day, so today I offer you two videos. :slight_smile: (Does anyone actually watch these things? Haha!)

This. Is. THAYER. (And Chewbacca and a Storm Trooper. Excellence.)

The Safewalker, an educational video…or not. :smiley:

PS. JK Rowling is amazing. In terms of general writing style, no, Harry Potter can’t measure up to LOTR. However, the storyline is fantastic in that it begs to be dissected, and everything means more than meets the eye. I’m proud to be obsessed, haha!

I’ve been binging on this band called The Last Shadow Puppets since yesterday. Ahhh so good.

@Ivy: I’d watch them but my internet is hella slow right now and YouTube would just kill it :(

Bummer, tetris! You’re missing out on epic Brown-ness. I’ll have to show them to you next fall. MAJOR KNOCKAGE.

Hey, it’s a one day thing! I’ll watch them tomorrow when the net’s faster :p

When i read the book I did not disect it! I read it and then was, gosh, Bella is a whiny, boy crazy, moody, and stupid girl. Edward is too. I’m sorry but there is no story or a real frighting villian! Victoria! For real now! You can even start to see in the books when Myer begins to half-a** it when she comes close to the ending. Seh does not get into detail about the fights they have in Eclipse and nothing is great about Twilight…nothing. Sorry to break peoples heart and bring them into the light. The only people who like them are whiny, boy crazy, moody, and stupid girls. Rowling is great at what she does and she is more fun to read. While reading Breaking Dawn i was like, when will it end, with Harry Potter you felt something after you read it. That’s when you know you had a great book is when you feel something in the end, because you got attached and sucked into the world. You become sadden because it ended.

@Ivy thanks for giving me the info about minors.

Is anyone else crapping themselves ready to hear back! I applied for RD on October 30th, I have done my interview. Now all I have to do is wait?

Another question. has anyone ever called the admissions office becuase the people who work in there are so nice and down to earth…unlike Columbia. :frowning: They scare me

Agreed, lovesbrownu. I feel like Twilight is helping with the slow erosion of feminism, haha. I mean, take away Edward, and WHO is Bella?
HP = <3

Adeyadi: Yeah I think I’m the only one too, I interrogated everyone about where they were applying.

tetrisfan: I wrote a research paper on Masculinity in fight club last year. Choke is great too…just don’t let your mum get her hands on that one. Order Invisible Monster from Amazon, def. the best book of his.

And loltwilight, I just prefer True Blood.

I think twilight also promotes unhealthy relationships, jfc he borders on stalker status.

Hahah, I’m sure we all have; anyone who WAS/IS applying to Brown ED from our school is undoubtedly an enemy now, hahah. Unless, of course, you wield enormous powers of dissuasion. ;)

I’ve heard that Invisible Monster is fantastic…I guess I’ll have to pick that one up now.

True Blood is one of my favorite TV shows! Anxiously waiting for the third season to start, too. =]

@flutterfly: Haha my mom actually bought Choke for me because she recognized the author :p. Either way, she doesn’t read any of my books, so there’s no danger there! I’ll definitely try get Invisible Monsters as soon as I can. Friggin Indian education system leaves me cramped for reading time till April, though… :-/

I’m a raging feminist and it’s just SAD to see how chauvinistic some girls in my class are :-/

Haha, Tetris. I’m waiting for the rest of your rant…it’s like deja vu! =]

Haha! No time now, I’ll be off in a few minutes. A bit later in the day, perhaps. By the way, you have to reply to my FB message!

Less than three weeks to go!

ah!!! random fact of the day:
The energy of a discharge of an electric eel could start 50 cars…this solves everything!!! we should just use eels instead of oil! =)
