Brown 2014 - PLME ED Applicants

Lots of people seemed to apply to Brown ED, but I know that people who applied to PLME also must be extra-stressed, so here’s a thread for us~ yay!

So, I have a couple questions for you guys:

 • What do you guys put as your intended major?
 • Are any of you guys going to apply to other 8-yr/accelerated med programs?

I wish us all the best of luck! :D

Hi! I applied non-binding PLME. I don’t expect to get in…10 or so kids from my grade are also applying to Brown ED, a few of which are legacies. We’ll see what happens though! I’m doing Nwestern HPME, UMKC, SLU, USC, BU,

hi =) um i did PLME ED…dont really know what to think but im not gonna let myself down by getting nervous but anyway…i put as my intended major biomedical engineering so i not only did the PLME part of the app but the engineering part too. i am trying to adapt this it will be okay if i dont get accepted attitude because im starting to feel as if i want it so bad that i would be able to function if i dont get it. so im trying to broaden my mind and get to like other schools as much as i like brown. so i am looking at u of miami, u of chicago luv that skool have lotz of family there suny schools and cuny schools…pretty much it…

@ g35x - I applied binding PLME, and I checked that box off for being a candidate for Brown regardless of whether I get into PLME. I know what you mean about lots of people applying, that’s the same case in my school and I was really surprised b/c last year, only one of my friends applied ED. I wanted to apply to Northwestern’s HPME, but I didn’t have the Chem and Math IIC requirements down.

@ Adeyadi - lots of essays X_X
I can’t seem to make myself get into that attitude b/c I really haven’t thought of any other schools besides Brown - not to say that I’m not applying elsewhere, but I just can’t seem to make myself care about any other school…

yep I’m applying PLME ED. I ticked the box that says I want to go to Brown even if I don’t get into PLME. The way I see it I want to go to Brown and the PLME is sort of like a ‘bonus feature’ :stuck_out_tongue: , it only required 2 more essays and doesn’t effect chances to Brown itself, so why not?
If I get it I would be on top of the world… but since the acceptance rate is sooooo low I don’t have any expectations.

Didn’t apply to any other medical programs, because the PLME is totally unique and nothing else is as good :p

My majors are Human Biology/Computational Biology.

I applied to PLME ED with a biology/possibly biotechnology major. Basically I know what I want to do as a career–cancer research, possibly focused on human genetics and biotechnology.

I checked the binding box because regardless of whether I get into PLME, my dream is to go to Brown; the open curriculum just makes it the perfect school for me, and the chances of acceptance into medical school as a normal undergrad are very high.

However, I honestly don’t really expect to get in.

Wow. Almost everyone here has about the same story as me: Brown is first choice – PLME would be a “bonus,” checked off little box that said I would take Brown w/out PLME, medical-related concentration, know TONS of kids who applied ED, can’t get myself to love any other school the way I love Brown, trying not to dwell on that too much though…

Now, I know this thred is for potential Brunians so don’t bite my head off, but… I don’t have ANY medical related activities, and I’m kind of freaking out about that. Has anyone out there heard the myth about the PLME applicant who had never volunteered at a hospital, hadn’t shadowed fleets of doctors, hadn’t participated in any research, etc., etc., AND STILL GOT IN?

I guess what I’m asking is: is there any hope for someone who has decent SATs/APs, glowing recs, superb essays, (all which demonstrated profound humility, of course ;] ), and AMAZING humanities-focused (alas, not medical-centric) extracurriculars in an area directly related to intended medical career?

Sigh.

I wonder how the box affects admission? Obviously if you’re not up to PLME caliber and you don’t check the box…you’re rejected or deffered…but I wonder if not checking the box shows that your that much more passionate towards medicine, and would pursue a different program if not accepted to PLME

If you are insinuating that not ticking the box shows that you are extra-passionate about medicine and thereby increases your chances of getting into PLME… I don’t think so…

g35x, I sure hope you’re wrong on that one. I don’t think you HAVE to check the box, even if you’re interested in med school. My son didn’t check, yet he’s quite keen on med school. Figures he’d get some lab experience, or research experience first. He just wasn’t ready to commit to 8+ years in one place right now. That may change, of course, but his decision wasn’t because his stats were low.

bjjones, I’m the same case. I actually want to major in Hispanic Studies and the reason I applied to PLME was because it’s easier to major in something that’s not related to medicine while still going to medical school. I didn’t research anything, I didn’t shadow doctors, and all I did was volunteer at some big hospital, but I’d argue that it’s really all up to them. Some people who have done tons of research might get rejected, some who didn’t might get accepted.

g35x, I asked the dean of PLME when she visited my school because I’ve seen conversations on the whole checking-the-box thing, but from what she said, it doesn’t influence their decision one way or the other.

Ok…no, no. I wasn’t insinuating anything. I kind of feel bad for not checking the box. Brown’s a great school…my parents just want me to go somewhere where I know I’ve got a spot in med school.
Cookie28, thats good news I guess!
Good luck to you all…hopefully we’ll get in.

oh ok. Well you know if you were to go to Brown even without the PLME the statistics show that ~ 81% of Brown students who apply to medical school get a place… which is far above the national average.
Good luck on those other programs man!
Medical school all the way :)

I applied ED to PLME.

Wating on pins and needles lol.

If one of you has a way to speed up time so that tomorrow would be Dec.15, I’d really appreciate it =)

hahaha my exact sentiments :D

Is it possible to apply to PLME regular decision? If so, are your chances of acceptance significantly decreased?

yes it is very possible to apply RD
Not sure how it affects your chances… Brown’s official line is probably, as always, that there is no difference in terms of acceptance.

Yet another PLME ED applicant. Biochem major; second choice - english.
Didn’t tick the magic ‘bound for life to Brown’ box. Although I love Brown, I’m really looking to get into a BS/MD program more so than to get into simply Brown undergrad.

In any case, as an Indian passport-holder, I’m seriously doubting my chances. Hehe.

Applying to HPME, Baylor/Rice and BU Liberal Arts/Medicine as well.

You guys are probably as petrified as I am. Thank God for solidarity. xD

Percentage of acceptance decreases when you apply regular decision. I think it might be because they think that Brown is not ur number pne choice. when u apply early they know that everyone who applied really wants to go there, so they accept more so that the regular decision kids who are just applying to apply when they deny acceptance it would be ok.

adeyadi, where did you get the statistics for ED PLME?
