plme?

hey! are a lot of ppl applying to the plme program? any ideas on acceptance stats? i finally sent in my app yesterday. fingers crossed

thanks for the input :)

From the view book they sent me: "In 2005-06 there were 1,651 applicants to the PLME, of whom 88 were offered admission to the PLME and an additional 99 were offered admission to other Brown degree programs."

So, acceptance is about 5.3%, and will probably be a little lower this year since the applicants always seem to go up but the class size is always the same.

Good luck though, someone has to get in!

I applied--I doubt I'll get in, but it sounds really cool.

A rep who came through our school said the acceptance for this year's plme should be around 3%.

I think Brown is playing a game of politics and telling the half-truth. I think probably 1700 people will apply to PLME this year, but you have to be accepted to Brown first to even stand a chance for PLME. So, the actual acceptance is actually quite a bit higher than 5.3%, if you judge it by the actual applicant pool and not the total applicant pool.

Just as a point of clarification: is it possible to be "premed" at Brown without being on the PLME? Will a non-PLME student there get advising and the right to apply to outside medical schools after completing undergrad at Brown? Is that a popular route?

Out of curiosity, if you get into PLME, are you bound to it? Do you have to go to med school, and do you have to go to Brown for med school?

I already submitted my app, and PLME is definitely not what I'm looking for, but it does sound really cool.

You are not bound to PLME. Each year, some students leave PLME to attend another medical school.

Aquanerd- from what I know, there are several people who end up applying to outside medical schools after Brown that are not in PLME. Most people don't know their intended majors when they start college anyway, so it's not surprising that people will go on to the premed track after a few semesters of classes.

Aquanerd: Many students are premed and not in PLME. You can major in whatever you want (English, Biology, Classics, etc.) and still take the necessary pre-med classes. There is advising for pre-med students not in PLME. In fact, I believe PLME students can also major in whatever they want.

mhm everything in the post above me is true

just some other things:

PLMEs form around half the class at Brown Med School, meaning they'll also take another 60-70 people from outside, including a bunch from affiliated Rhode Island colleges)

I've heard the retention rate for PLMEs from undergrad to med school is over 90%, so the vast majority of people choose to stay and attend Brown Med (you can apply to other med schools if you want, and you can also leave medicine altogether)

There are tons and tons of resources available for regular premed students at Brown. In fact, the college has one of the best pre-med programs out there (in terms of % accepted into med schools, it's one of the top five colleges in the country)

yay brown!

A nice article discussing the pre-med program and the PLME at Brown:

The Brown Daily Herald

Great article, thanks!

thanks so much for the responses everyone! i agree (or at least hope) that the acceptance stats probably are a bit deceptive. oh and yes plme students can major in w/e they want as long as they fill the pre-med requirements.

if you applied both college and plme... do they see the plme essay also to admit you into the collegE?

No, they do not.

hmm, I called them and they said that they do read all the essays...

It would be safe to assume that the admissions officers (on both sides) read all the essays...

I think that the average PLME class will be about 50 students. The way one of the deans described it, BMS is aiming for ~100 students/medical school class, and 50 will be from PLME, and 50 from outside the program.

Students applying out of the program to other med schools (or, as Sectumsepra said, choosing not to do medicine) is a reality, albeit rare. However, once you are accepted to PLME, your advisors (and classmates!) will do the best they can to convince you to stay the whole 8 years.

Also, it should be noted that PLME is a changing program...for instance, the 3.0 GPA is not required anymore, beginning with the class of 2011 PLMEs will only have their undergrad advisers for 4 years instead of 6, there might be more science requirements but no one knows yet, etc. Good luck to everyone applying!

3%
that tells me if I have doubts about my admittance, I'm get getting in
don't you think people who can make these kind of cuts already know that they will get in?

umm if i want to apply early to PLME… do i have to state that im applyin early to Brown on the commonp app?? And also, is the deadline for PLME same as the deadline for the early decision to Brown
