Hi! I’m from Australia, majoring in English. I plan to study for an MFA in acting afterwards, and I’ve been really intrigued by Brown’s. I love the idea of learning playwriting and Directing as well as acting. And I’ve read about the abundance of extracurricular opportunities. But can someone shed so more light on the actual acting training in the program for me? I’d really love to know and I haven’t come across any threads that elaborate on it. Thanks!
I assume you’ve already checked this out, but just in case…http://www.browntrinity.com/
You might also try the grad school forum; you’re more likely to find MFA info there.
Brown has an exceptional playwriting/theater program, particularly at the graduate level. I don’t have a lot of personal experience, but I’ve good things.
Get in touch with some professors and students in the department. That’s the best way! (also, make a list of what you want in a program, so you know what to ask)
There is a really neat article in this winter’s issue of Teaching Theatre by Sarah Ruhl, a Brown BA, MFA, about her experience at Brown learning from professor and playwright Paula Vogel
Ruhl says: “I found in Paula’s approach to playwriting a great deal of pleasure and a great deal of play. It was almost too pleasurable, and to decadent.”
Both these women are very accomplished. Vogel has won a Pulitzer Prize and Ruhl has been a finalist and has a Tony nomination.
@JonahVark , if you’re still out there, I thought you might find this profile of interest:
Katie Pearl, a current Brown MFA student, was mentioned in today’s NY Times.
