I’m an incoming student at the University of Washington and am considering applying for an MFA at Brown in either fiction writing or acting. What are some qualities that set students apart in the application process other than their quality of work for the audition? What GPA is expected and what kinds of activities should I include on a resume to distinguish myself in the highly selective admissions process? I would like to learn from my mistakes in high school by planning out my education path and school choices in advance. Thanks for any input!

PS would it be better to transfer? UW was not my first choice for a school

Admission to Brown’s theatre MFA program is (like most theatre MFA programs) audition and resume based, so I would totally immerse yourself in theatre for the next four years at U of Wash to build a resume and prepare for auditions. You might consider the Summer theatre apprentice program at Brown http://www.brown.edu/ce/undergrad/theatre/ to get a feel for the program. Other good summer programs include the Williamstown festival at Williams College and the Powerhouse festival at Vassar. Be aware, most Theatre MFA programs have very few spots and are highly selective. Many try out to multiple programs for multiple years before landing a spot. For example Yale typically gets over 1400 applicants per year for nine spots.
