Brown Class of 2018 Early Decision Applicants

I do info sessions with the office of admission, and they told an applicant who asked a question about this to expect to be contacted by the Nov. 22nd, either informing you that you have an interview, or that an interview in your area is not possible. No-one should go uncontacted. If in fact no-one contacts you by the 22nd, you can and should contact admissions at that point, as it is possible that somehow your email got lost in the deep recesses of the internet, which could mean other emails might meet a similar grisly ending, and it shows that any lack of interview is not because of a lack of interest on your part. Also: check your spam folder! Lastly, about 90% of all applicants will have an interview. For the 10% who don’t, the problem is often simply that in some areas Brown has too many applicants per interviewer, and there are not enough alumni to interview them. It is in effect a randomized system to determine who gets one when they ‘divy up’ the interviewers, not any judgement on the ‘need’ or lack of need to interview any applicant; to make this point in a different way, admissions plainly doesn’t have the time to make anything close to an admissions decision on the applicants so early, so if you don’t get an interview, the only thing you can accurately infer from this is the following: you will not do an interview. This does NOT count against you during the admissions process, as it obviously is not the applicant’s fault that Brown was unable to interview them. Hope that helps! Good luck with it all!

As Brown does not offer an Early Action option, my D applied RD to Brown and EA to Yale. She would have applied EA to Brown, if an option. Ironically though, Brown was the first and only university (out of 12) thus far to contact her for an interview. She had the interview, and the alum mentioned that it was his first this year and that Brown wanted him to perform such for her by the end of November. That of course made it sound like he thought she was as an ED applicant. My D thus went back and made sure that the Common Application correctly listed it as RD for Brown. Meanwhile… she has had no contact regarding an interview from Yale, despite her being an early applicant there. We are thankful that she had her Brown interview and that it went well, but we are also hopeful that she did not take the spot of an ED applicant in our area who may not be interviewed as a result. Or maybe it is simply the case that the ratio is better in our area (Tampa) for Brown versus Yale in terms of alum available to interview applicants. Either way, I have to give Brown a lot of credit for their efficiency thus far in the application process.

WWWard, I wouldn’t worry about another person from the area not being interviewed. Also even if Brown had an EA option, your D would not have been able to apply EA as Yale’s EA is Single-Choice- you can’t apply anywhere else ED/EA.

Anyways I’m an ED applicant and have my interview scheduled for Thursday. Good luck to everyone!

It just dawned on me how slim my chances are to get in… But oh well, I wouldn’t have had a chance at all if I didn’t apply! Hahah.

@CatchingMyStars why do you say that? :frowning: be optimistic!

Hah well. My school deflates our scores really badly… And I got a 2100 on the SATs. So I know where I stand )’:

Oh, come on, CMS! If it makes you feel better, I know a current Brown student who got in with a 1960 SAT score.

Hey all! Have you all seen this? It just appeared on https://selfservice.brown.edu!

How do you check whether our CSS profile has been received?
I goto my portal and then when I view the Fin Aid requirements, I have no aid year 2014-15 to select from the list. I am concerned about this since CSS is very crucial. I emailed the office and got many replies but to no avail. They say the option is there while I am so befuddled I have checked every clickable link. Yet I see no aid year 2014-15 on my list :(

I am battling this problem since Nov 6. Is it that the fin aid portal isn’t updated?
What do my friends have here? Do you have 2014-15 aid year on the drop down list, mates? As for me, this is what I get :
http://s23.postimg.org/h95ge0gl7/problem.jpg</a></p>

Yeah, that’s what I get too. My theory is that the 2014-15 year will come up around the same time we get the admissions results.

maybe you’re theory is true. or maybe they hven’t updated the portal of fin aid. My problem is how to make sure that our CSS profile and financial docs have been received?

Phodchu… if it’s an consolation, I don’t think anyone has that confirmation as of yet. It doesn’t show up on our daughter’s page and a few people have asked the same. As long as College Board says they’ve sent it, you’ll be OK. If for some reason Brown didn’t get it, you’ll have your receipt from college board that your profile was indeed sent on schedule.

I just logged into my account, and the year 2014-2015 doesn’t show up even for me. Not something for you guys to worry about.

Thanks everyone. So it’s not a problem anymore then.
btw, Bruno14, answer this for me please :
If we opt for dual degree, like engineering+BSc or 2 BSc in different fields and have to stay oncampus for the fifth year, what will happen to our financial aid? Is it extended? I wish to learn a lot and possibly do everything Brown has to offer, so I am thinking of 2BSc or engin+BSc. But without fin aid, I cannot even last a month at Brown. Will I get financial aid for 5th year if I have to stay after my 4th year?

Ok… I know this is really late… But where did you guys and how did you guys send your Financial aid stuff? I just indicated on common app, but I don’t know where to go from there. And yeah, same problem for me!

CatchingMyStars, you only need to send CSS profile if you are applying for financial aid. If you said yes on financial aid intent question in Commonapp, visit profileonline.collegeboard.org and fill up the fall2014-spring2015 profile and send to the college. It is late but I think sending is still better than not sending.

Guys, did you take a look at this?: [Early decision applications hit record high ? Brown Daily Herald](Early decision applications hit record high - The Brown Daily Herald)
I’m feeling a little bit worried.

dw: this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. Someone 365 days from now will also be responding to how 2014 saw more ED apps than 2013. Just like someone a year ago was worried b/c 2012 was more than 2011 etc.

Oh dear. I just got contacted for an interview–and I’ve never interviewed before in my entire life. For those who were interviewed already, how was it?

renoverchat: mine was over the phone; if you have an in person one, be grateful! I felt almost overly prepared as well as sociable. Interviewer was even more casual than I had anticipated.
