^^I agree. Most everybody has a top choice. WWWard’s daughter’s top choice is Brown. That’s great. Other parents’ kids have other top choices. That’s great too. But not sure what the point is…that different kids like different schools for different reasons? I can buy that, good point.

Indeed. Maybe that is the point.

I was merely sharing and emphasizing my own daughter’s overwhelming enthusiasm for her top choice college. But I also read online recently that roughly 70% of all college applicants are accepted into their first choice college. If accurate, that is extremely positive and encouraging. I for one find it comforting that this season is not overwhelmingly a disappointing one for too many high school seniors. It is a great thing for those applicants and their families, and it also emphasizes the vast and wide spectrum of opinion out there… as these applicants most likely consider their own top choice a good fit for themselves… regardless of the reason. Hopefully they also characterize their selection as a great school, but it is likely that many are making decisions for a # of key reasons.

If true, that survey though also suggests that roughly 30% of all college applicants face some form of disappointment when decisions are announced. I myself ended up attending my 3rd choice college… but it all turned out fine in the end.

But clearly greatness per se is in the eye of the beholder. And that is likely as is should be…

Here’s hoping that the vast majority of CCers are among the 70% this Decision Season.

Good Luck to all applicants and their families this year.

Everyone, of course, has different criteria and that’s cool - but criteria such as ‘Ivy’ and ‘Buzz Factor’ and choices of Stanford, Princeton, Brown and Columbia makes me question her research. I’ve been immersed in this college search process for the past 18 months or so (helping my own daughter) and I truly do believe there are hundreds of colleges where one can get a brilliant education, but finding the matches takes a lot of introspection and research, and often times you have to look beyond the Ivy League and the top ranked universities.

Recently, on the Harvard board, someone started a brutally honest and somewhat cautionary thread about seeing beyond the brand names:

<a href=“It Has to be Said - #20 by snarlatron - Harvard University - College Confidential Forums”>It Has to be Said - #20 by snarlatron - Harvard University - College Confidential Forums;

Having said all that, I’m happy for your daughter’s enthusiasm for Brown. It is, of course, a great school along with her other choices.

Hey guys, maybe you didn’t see it or something, but this thread is for “applicants”, hence the name: Brown Class of 2018 Regular Decision APPLICANTS. If you want, go make a thread to continue your discussion, but this one is for the applicants to discuss things/ learn about each other/ provide encouragement/ console each other when most are rejected/ etc…

In the spirit of the previous post… Have any of you visited Brown yet? I have not, but I will if I am lucky enough to be accepted!

I certainly advise visiting. My daughter was confident that Brown was her first choice, but she only became 100% sure after visiting Brown and the surrounding area.

lol, some people can’t help themselves.

I visited Brown last April. The campus is beautiful and the city of Providence is very quaint.

If you click into your Status Checker, and go into the Financial Aid section, has everyone who have submitted Financial Aid information, received “Pell Grants” for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015? Or is this a hint that we have been admitted?

@plt222: There will be no hints that you have or have not been admitted. The Financial Aid office is completely separate from the Admissions office, and begins to process all applications for FA as soon as they’re sent in, before admissions decisions are made.

I got a phone call from Providence yesterday and got super excited thinking that it might somehow be someone from Brown calling to let me know that I was accepted (or something like that). But no, it was a wrong number…

@OACLJV
I know the feeling! I got a phone call from Ithaca, NY (Cornell) a couple days back and it just turned out to be a student asking if I had any questions about the school or my application.

@wwward there are definitely a couple hundred great college choices out there, although perhaps not that many for your daughter based on her goals and interests. A someone else mentioned, “great” can be defined differently by different people. I am a recruiter for a global company. We hire over 2,000 college grads every year and NOT ONE of them comes from Brown. That does not by any means that Brown is not a great school- of course it’s a fabulous school. My company however is looking for students in a specific major and that major does not exist at Brown. So- you have to keep in mind what the student is looking for not only in a school but ultimately in a career.

Has anyone received an email or any indication from Brown that their application is complete? The application status only shows the date documents are received.

@Sunnyone: if Brown was missing anything from your application, they would have let you know by now.

Hi guys kind of late but thought I’d enter the conversation but I haven’t been on cc in a long long time. Can’t wait until decisions. Gonna go visit campus in a couple weeks. Lol I feel I’ll love Brown even more!

I had an interview awhile ago but it wasn’t just a normal alum, it was the regional director in charge of assigning alumni interviewers for a few states and he said he handpicked me to interview. He ended up loving me, and said that he had some weight with admissions. He also encouraged both me and my guidance counselor to send in update emails with my regional admissions officer, which I did. Do regional directors actually have any pull in the process? Thanks!

Is it true that all Ivys will be releasing their decisions on March 27th, or is Brown still on April 1st? Also, and I apologize if this has been answered already, doesn’t Brown announce decisions by email/online or by snail-mail?

^All Ivies release on March 27. And Brown releases through their portal.

@my88keys Thank you! Also, I LOVE your picture!
