I am currently writing a common essay that I will be submitting for the Brown PLME ED program. The essay will focus on my experiences, or rather a particular experience, with volunteering at a local hospital.
Is this topic too cliche and overused? I would like to DM willing people a copy of the intro to my essay and request them to judge whether it’s a good topic or not for the common app.
For the PLME, Brown looks for students with diverse interests perhaps outside of the typical life sciences realm seen in “traditional” pre-medical students. That being said, they still expect you to demonstrate top-notch aptitude in the sciences, and usually the successful applicants to the program have some kind of research/clinical/shadowing/etc. experience to support their declared interest in a career as a physician.
Your topic is not cliche or overused per se, and you will definitely want to use it, for the reasons I mentioned above. That being said, your critical (and difficult!) task is definitely going to be to put this in a unique light, for you specifically, and how your interests will be specifically suited to the options provided by the PLME. Hope this makes sense.
