Hi I was deferred in Brown ED this year, and I was wondering if people who were deferred by Brown ED then accepted could share their stats/application/spikes?
Thank You!

Hey guys I’m Kate and I got deferred! I had a 1480 SAT, 720 Math 2 and 700 Literature. 3.75 GPA but take all APs and go to a. Very competitive high school in New York (no ranking). I have been dancing professionally for 14 years, president of MUN with many awards, play piano as well and have performed in Carnegie hall! I also am a first generation American and speak fluent Russian. I hope I get in regular. I might retake a subject test but not sure if it’s worth doing that or bringing up my gpa
Deferred with a 1590, 790 on math 2, and 770 on lit. Had a 3.55 GPA at a top-ranked private high-school in DC, with a very challenging curriculum. Dual citizen (but not an international student) and legacy, with strong extracurriculars and what I thought were interesting essays. Also served a one-day alcohol-related suspension. Intended to concentrate in philosophy.
1510 SAT I, 700 Bio M and 680 Math 2. Strong EC’s (first aid provider at the voluntary ambulance service, 2 month medical internship over the summer, I have been playing tennis for 11 years, member of the board in Interact and Leo, provider of psychological support to childred in Save the Children organization, coordinater of my school’s science fair) and also some honors awards for achievements in tennis, for implication is school projects and for academic achievements (all are national awards). I also had strong recommendations from my math, biology, and psychology teachers, my coach, and the doctor which I assisted during my internahip. I am an international student and we have different GPA’s (mine is 9.7 out of 10). Also, I got a 110 in the TOEFL exam.

Got deferred tonight… 1480 SAT, 32 ACT, Have taken 8 APs, UW GPA of 3.9 and I go to a public school in MA. Class of about 200 kids but I was the only one who applied ED. Very involved with Best Buddies program at my school (work with special needs kids) and a club called MVP (mentors in violence prevention) and am involved with a lot of science/math tutoring and volunteering at my school. I had very good rec letters from my AP lang teacher and a chemistry teacher, thought my supplements were pretty well written and not cliche. Not sure what exactly I would concentrate in but something related to math/computer science/economics. btw 3 of the four APs I’m taking now are Calculus, Statistics, and Physics which are related to what I want to pursue.
I was deferred with a 1270. Surprised wasn’t flat reject. Preety sure it’s a soft rejection though.
Deferred. 34 ACT, 6 APs (one 4, others are 5s), SAT II 700 and 720. UW GPA 4.0. Hook is political involvement. Fingers crossed for March
Deferred with a 3.7 UW and 35 ACT, 8 APs in total (one 4 and three 5s out the ones taken) good ECs, URM. I was sad for about an hour but I’m trying to be optimistic
S19 deferred, but is excited about other options as well. State: 3.9 UW, 35 ACT, 780 Math Subject, 4 APs, varsity soccer, photographer (built own darkroom), Hispanic, strong letters and other ECs. Private high school in Pennsylvania.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
I can’t rate my own essays, but my AP Lang teacher had me teach her classes for the day because she read my essay and wanted me to help others with theirs. Metaphors, pedantic, you get the gist.
Poured my literal heart and soul into the Brown and PLME supplements and worked on them throughout the entire summer.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: AP Lang teacher - see above, probably 9/10
Teacher Rec #2: Honors pre-calc teacher - one of those geniuses that seem to walk on water. Might’ve thought I was too much of a perfectionist, but he knows I have a strong work ethic. 8/10
Counselor Rec: I have a close relationship with her, but she seems to make everyone feel that way. 8/10
Additional Rec:
Interview: Phone interview. Went well over the standard 30 minutes, and she seemed impressed by the questions I asked her. Mentioned my love for Frank Lloyd Wright, and she happens to live across from one of his homes. Thought that would for sure get me in.
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Neuroscience - also applied PLME #rip
State (if domestic applicant): MI
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: mid-size public, suburban (class of around 330)
Ethnicity: white, Jewish
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: too high for aid (and admission apparently)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none.
Reflection
Strengths: I think (thought) I’m pretty good on paper. GPA, ACT, etc. Also maybe my research internships?
My application had a strong central theme and my interests were exemplified through my extracurriculars and essays.
Weaknesses: I denied this in my head for the longest time but now I’m realizing that I’m not truly the Brown “type.” I convinced myself otherwise because the dream of PLME overrode any of my doubts about Brown being the right fit.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: See above.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere yet.
General Comments: I proposed to Brown, and they’re holding off to explore their other options. On the off–emphasis on “off”–chance that I get accepted RD, I don’t think I can get over that.
As the great Suzy Lee Weiss once put it, “to those kids who by age 14 got their doctorate, cured a disease, or discovered a guilt-free brownie recipe: My parents make me watch your “60 Minutes” segments, and they’ve clipped your newspaper articles for me to read before bed. You make us mere mortals look bad.”
Deferred with
1540 SAT
3.94 4-year cumulative (out of 4.3)
most recent GPA 4.1
800 SAT II Math 2, 750 SAT II Lit
41 Predicted for IBDP
Activities range from rugby to screenwriting to fam responsibilities, its hard to capture the nuances in a second lol. Essays I thought were all quite good. I think my Common App essay may have actually held me back a bit. Going back and making revisions to that now. Hoping for the best going forward!!
Dear @bigoof , do you mind elaborate on why you think you’re ‘not a Brown type’?
Oh, and you’re actually a strong candidate. Figuring skating, violin and piano are my dream activities, although I can only afford a violin, while my city doesn’t have a skating area.
I think you will be accepted to an amazing school in RD!
@theDOVE Based on what I observed when I visited and what I’ve read online, I see a Brown student as someone who is politically outspoken and dedicated to a very specific cause. I’m not saying this assumption holds true for all Brown students, but this type of personality is prevalent among most of the current students I know. Brown advertises that they want a diverse student body, but the one linking factor between many admitted students seems to be that they are unapologetically opinionated. While I do admire and respect this, I don’t feel that I have that voice yet.
@bigoof Thank you for your insight! I guess they are looking for strong characters then. After all, those with weaker personalities may get internalized and somehow lose their uniqueness in the process. Haha, politics aren’t my thing though, but it doesn’t matter.
I still think you are one impressive candidate ^^ whichever school you decide to apply to in the future, I think you will have a good chance. Good luck!!
If you want to submit another rec, is it supposed to be sent in before Jan (the regular app deadline)?
