Brown, Hopkins, etc. I'll chance you back

I have applied early decision to Brown

I am applying regular decision to:
UPenn
Johns Hopkins
Wesleyan University
Franklin and Marshall
Gettysburg
Lafayette

I'm a white male living in the suburbs of eastern Pennsylvania and going to a good public school. The average graduating class usually has 2-4 kids out of about 400 going to Ivies\Stanford\MIT\Berkeley.

Stats:
GPA- 88.43UW\97.13W
Rank- 62 of 424 (14.6%)as of the end of junior year, but my senior year grades are much higher
SAT- 760M 760CR 680W 1520\2200, I only took them twice and with nearly identical scores
SATII- MathII 760, and US History 770, only took them once
APs- 5 in American History, 4 in English Language, 5 in Macroeconomics, and 4 in American Government
Senior Courses: AP Physics B (2 credits), AP Psychology, AP European History, AP English Literature, AP Microeconomics, CP Statistics (the only math that fit in my schedule), and Modern World Issues.
I have taken almost entirely honors\AP classes all four years.

ECs:
Scholastic Scrimmage (general knowledge quiz bowl team), captain. I've been involved since freshman year and have been on varsity since sophomore year. Two years ago we were in conference semifinals and the semifinals of a 40 school tournament. Last year we were 2nd place in district and in the semifinals of the same tournament.
Debate, cross examiner, on the finals team this year, we were conference champions last year, and I am on the top tier team.
Philosophy Society, president
Students for Political Action, libertarian party chairman
Young Republicans Club, vice president
Chess, varsity
Mock Trial Court, I'm one of only six students to make it on the competition team
Creative Writing Club, executive committee officer since sophomore year
Principal Student Advisory Board
Library Advisory Board
Won 2nd Best Representative at Pennsylvania Model State Assembly last year
Voted "Class Einstein" in senior superlatives
I've worked at my local library for 2.5 years

My essay is "very good but wouldn't be amazing to Ivy League schools", according to people who used to be admissions readers.
One of my teacher recommendations is going to be very good and the other is going to be absolutely fantastic. My counselor rec is going to be average.

Thanks and I will chance you back as soon as possible.

Great test scores. Unweighted GPA is a little low for a few of those schools (do you have an upward or downward trend?) Strong EC’s.

UPenn (CAS?): Reach
Johns Hopkins: Low reach
Wesleyan University: Low reach
Franklin and Marshall: Match
Gettysburg: Match
Lafayette: Match

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1245458-big-upward-trend-strong-sats-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Your test scores and ECs are very strong.
The only thing that might hurt is the GPA. But I don’t think by that much.
I think you might have a good shot with the ED at Brown.
Upenn might be a bit tough and Johns Hopkins will be a low reach.
The other colleges, I don’t know about.
Good luck and thanks for chancing me.

Brown (reach)
UPenn (reach)
Johns Hopkins (reach)
Wesleyan University (low reach)
Franklin and Marshall (match)
Gettysburg (match)
Lafayette (match)
I had my friend tell me what to put cuz i’m not that good with matching. hopefully it’s accurate and you’ll get in!

It’s not that the GPA could hurt, unfortunately it will eliminate you from consideration. More specifically, your rank will. Without a hook, any student has pretty much zero chance at an ivy if they’re outside of the top 10%. very few not in the top 5% will ain acceptance and most unhooked kids at all ivies other than Cornell’s land grant are literally top 2 in their class.

A high school sending 4 to the ivies is not particularly competitive, I’m sure the unhooked getting in from your HS are top of class.

I wish more of the kids here would look at the schools’ common data sets before applying. What you’d see is that Penn only admits 2% who were not top 10%. I suggest you look for each of your schools. Here’s a condensed look at Brown’s:

[Brown Admission: Facts & Figures](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)

your GPA is a little low but other than that you have a good shot! good luck! chance me please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1247480-chances-getting-into-boston-university.html</a> thanks!

You have an excellent shot, Penn, Brown, JHU etc. aren’t nearly as much of a crap-shoot as are the big 5. That considered, your GPA is rough, maybe ask your guidance counselor to add to her letter something positive about how hard you worked or how well you do relative to your classmates. Your ECs seem to be mostly quality and well directed in nature, but might seem like a laundry list to some Admissions reps. Best of luck.

Care to answer my question? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1247527-how-badly-does-hurt-my-chances-top-schools.html</a></p>

UPenn (depends on what but if CAS): Reach
Johns Hopkins: Low reach–> which program? BME would be much harder
Wesleyan University: Low reach
Franklin and Marshall: Match
Gettysburg: Match
Lafayette: Match

Your GPA is a bit low. What Is an A in your school?
But I think your ECs are great

Thanks everyone. And Penn is for CAS, and Johns Hopkins is School of Arts and Sciences.

and at my school an A is a 90, but that’s pretty much irrelevant since they don’t use a 4.0 system.

UPenn : Mid Reach
Johns Hopkins: Reach
Wesleyan University: Don’t know about this
Franklin and Marshall: Match
Gettysburg: Match
Lafayette: Match

GPA isn’t the greatest but your SAT is good. You’ve got a small chance at UPenn.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1243215-chance-me-ucs-privates-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

What is your intended major?

UPenn : Mid/High Reach
Johns Hopkins: Reach
Wesleyan University: Low reach
Franklin and Marshall: Match
Gettysburg: Match
Lafayette: Match

You seem like a very competitive applicant and I wish you all the best! Good luck! Please chance me back. The link in below.

I think you’re a competitive applicant for your ED school. Your standardized testing is good but GPA may be a little bit low (UW). But your EC’s look good and look like stuff that you dedicate to and spend a lot of time on. I guess the rest is up on the subjective side of things (essays, teacher recs, etc). Good luck!

Johns Hopkins: Reach

These posts make me scratch my head. What part of that Penn and Brown accept under 2% of applicants with the OPs rank don’t kids get? Trust me, that 2% is comprised of impact athletes.

Upenn, Brown and Hopkins are reaches, with Hopkins being the lowest reach out of the three. Not sure about Wesleyen but the others are matches.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1246572-chance-me.html</a></p>

At one time this was true, but those days are gone. HYPS take 6% and Brown take 9%. There’s tremendous applicant overlap.
