Brown Resumed Undergraduate Education

This program, specifically. I was homeschooled about half of my life, probably more, so no school transcripts. I have my GED and my ACT scores both around 98th percentile but I… Idk, my dream as a kid, before things kind of went to hell, was to go to an Ivy League school. I think the RUE may be my only feasible chance. I don’t want to wait another dozen years or so, you know? I’m already old as heck for a college student P:

Wow misamelee, your story sounds very similar to mine. We should really talk sometime! I doubt you are old as heck seeing as though I’m ancient. I am so glad to hear you are going for your dreams. Hard work pays off!

I am neither homeschooled nor schooled. The last grade I completed was 7th grade, and then I missed all the rest of the years. Things were just really bad at home back then, and I didn’t have a place to live. I have had to work extra hard to make up for it. I feel like I finally have.

Wow! So did you guys ever get GEDs? You both have really cool stories.

I love Brown because of the open curriculum, campus vibe, financial aid, location, and their course list is the best one I’ve come across. So many cool classes. Plus you can take a class without fear of failure. That is huge for me because I love to learn new things but sometimes hold back at my current school for fear of a failing grade.

Yes, I got my GED.

I like the open curriculum as well. One of the things I really want to do is take graduate level math classes while still an undergraduate. On the Brown math website it says that most math majors get to take many more math classes than are required, and this is a huge draw for me.

Getting prepared for graduate school is a top priority, and Brown would give me a chance to get ahead of the game, and seeing as though I’m 34, that is a good thing

I understand the draw of being able to take a class without fear of failing. That is another strong point. Some subjects like Chemistry and Astronomy, I would like to give a try.

My reasons are very similar to what’s already been said. The Program and Open Curriculum equally sparked my initial interest. The laid-back student body is also a plus! However, I would say that my main reason for wanting to attend Brown is academically related–the fact that Brown offers my intended major.

As for my background…I’m a first generation college student; took a break from the classroom a few years ago because I felt I didn’t have direction and guidance. I didn’t know what major to pursue and felt discouraged (alone) going through college on my own.

During my time out of school, I worked for the federal government. The experience my former employer gave me has been the driving force for my interest in public policy today. It’s also lit an intense passion that has me motivated and excited about returning to school to complete my degree.

@IndirectProofs I hope you get in. It sounds like you’ve worked hard. Are you at a community college? Would you transfer in as a Junior?

I have my GED, yes. Got it a long time ago. I took a semester of online college once but that’s about it. I’ll be a first time student pretty much.

IndirectProofs- I was daydreaming the other day about taking three concentrations and getting a bachelor’s of science in X, Y, and Z. Lol.

I got my GED in 2001, isn’t that crazy? That was definitely a long time ago.

@misamelee I have been doing a lot of daydreaming lately. I guess that’s all we can do until we find out.

@butfirstcoffee I am not a student right now. I was at the community college last year, and took all the upper level math classes offered. Then since there was nothing more for me to take, I just focused on doing my applications this semester.

I have definitely worked hard, I have so many accomplishments in math, but I do have a college record from a long time ago that isn’t strong. So it is really hard to say what they will think of my application.

@IndirectProofs I think all the RUE applicants have pretty wild applications. I wouldn’t worry that yours is too different. So do you have other courses to transfer, or just math? Would you go in as a freshman or junior?

@misamelee Oh wow, that’s kinda amazing! So what made you decide to go to school now? Did you apply as a high school senior? I’m applying as a community college student but I graduated aaaaaaages ago. I’d enter as a junior.

2008 for my GED. And lol, I have zero college record and zero transcripts. I scored well enough on the ACT and wrote good enough essays that I hope to make up to it.

I’m 10 years past highschool age, butfirstcoffee. I’ll just be entering as a freshman, however that works.

@butfirstcoffee I think that I will enter as a sophomore. I do have some other courses that will transfer besides math. I Mostly general education courses.

I appreciate you guys a bunch. It’s nice to know we are in this together.

My whole checklist is finally checked off! Yay!

Did you guys apply for Spring or Fall? Did it give an option to choose? I can’t remember!!

I want to know when they start scheduling interviews. Does anyone know?

@IndirectProofs Judging from last year’s pool, it looks like they do interviews at the end of April and send out decisions by May 15th.

A few other people are posting in my thread. Looks like they’ve started military interviews already. I spoke with school advisers a couple of times to sort out my checklist (finally done!) and they said they’re still on schedule for results mid may.

Thank you so much for the update @misamelee. I will check out your thread. I hope I get an interview!

I kinda do, kinda don’t? Military people are guaranteed an interview. For the rest of us, an interview could be a good thing or could mean we’re on the borderline for being considered. Either way (interview or no) will be stressful, I suppose. Just gotta keep hoping.
