After doing some research on the cross-registration program, it appears that for many of the RISD classes (art history, theory, etc) it is necessary to complete a petition process. My question is for current students-How difficult is it to successfully petition for these classes at RISD?

bump…?

I answer your prayers. Art major at Brown who takes classes at RISD

It is not necessary to do a petition process unless you want to a. take more than 4 courses at RISD. Even then, the VA dept is very lax and will let you if it is curricularly applicable, or, b. if you want to take a liberal arts class, since they are less strenuous at RISD. If it is something Brown doesn’t offer, it will probably be approved. There is little need to take art history at RISD. The classes are slightly “Rocks for jocks” and the HIAA department at Brown is very good.

The problems you will run into are a. getting into a very popular class. This depends on the department. Some classes are more popular than others and RISD kids get first pick. The key is to be proactive, and takl to the professor a good semester prior to when the class will happen to get a spot and make yourself known. Be assertive. You’ll get in.
b. syncing up your brown schedule with your RISD schedule is difficult. If you have an all day friday art class, you now can’t take any MWF classes at Brown.

Cross registering is not easy, but it is very doable depending on the department. If you have any questions please contact me.
