Brown University cross register RISD

Hi Everyone,
I was recently looking at the option that Brown University offers it’s students to cross register at RISD (for unto 4 courses). I was wondering if anyone had had any experience in doing so and if they could comment on (a) how easy it is to cross register (b) what classes they took and what their experience was like.

You should post this in the Brown form…

I am a parent of a student at Brown so I do not have any personal experience, but I have heard that it is very easy to cross-register at RISD and it is a great experience. The biggest hurdles are: (1) the Brown and RISD calendars do not match so you may need to arrive on campus early or leave late; and (2) some classes can be nearly impossible to get into/fit into your schedule. For example, RISD typically starts the second semester earlier than Brown.

the process for registering per se is very simple, the actual fitting a class into your schedule might be difficult for the reasons outlined above. Additionally a studio class might require a 6 or 8 hour block which might be hard to find depending on your other classes.

In addition there are some classes that even RISD students have trouble getting into, and those are near impossible for Brown students to get into. (Some of the fashion courses, some of the “ground work” drawing classes etc.) However, there are some others that can be very interesting that even a student without a “portfolio” can get into. Every student I’ve heard that made the effort really enjoyed their RISD course(s). Of course since it does take a bit more effort, that might be a self selecting group.
