When I visited Brown, I unfortunately did not get a chance to see students in session (I visited during the summer). However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that most kids on my tour looked like the kids from my high school - I guess, my “comfort-zone.” However, this look that I saw of the prospective students contrasts greatly with the “rumors” I’ve heard of what Brown students are – (and I know this post is going to get torn to pieces but I HAVE to say what others have told me) birkenstock wearing, pot smoking, emo kids who have liberal politics on the mind all the time. How would you describe the typical Brown student? Are they as nerdy as the kids I saw at Harvard? Or are they like the rumors I’ve heard?

I can only speak for the experience of my own kid, S, who is a first year. He wears flipflops or running shoes, is moderate in his politics, and is living in a subfree dorm with a lot of kids he says are very bright and level-headed. Don't know if they are typical, exactly, but I think Brown teaches tolerance of all types. I have also heard that they are concerned about the number of first years misusing alcohol the first weeks of this year, and I would guess there will be some repercussions. My son is not a nerdy type. I would guess you will find some of every type there! Maybe it would be possible for you to make another visit during the year to see if the fit is good or not for you.

I've only been at Brown as a student for like 3.5 weeks now, and matty, I have to say you can find pretty much any type of person here. Yes, there are birkenstock sporting pot heads, but there are also kids who like to party at night after spending the afternoon reading Scandanavian Lit. Basically, I don't think you'll have much of a problem finding kids you like (unless you're a conservative, I have to say so far, I've gotten the feeling that if I were a conservative, I would have a lot fewer friends)

momofthree, yes, there was an e-mail sent out to people about 1st years drinking. Most likely the only repercussions will be 1 hr visits to health services for a substance abuse class.

My friends and I, whenever we have conversations involving politics, there is almost never agreement, but we listen to each other and discuss it out, and maybe no one's opinion gets changed, but everyone is respectful. Although I might be the most conservative of the bunch, and I'm libertarian, so I don't know how it'd be for hardcore republicans.

hahaha thats amazing

Birkenstock-wearing and pot-smoking are incongruous with "emo."

But Brown is really more accepting than one might think. I don't drink or smoke (I do wear sandalls, but not Birkenstocks...haha), and my choices are not ridiculed and I've made pleeeenty of friends.

hahah im a hardcore conservative and applied ED to brown

..haha
