Brown Tennis

So, I am a competitive athlete (tennis) and was wondering of my chances to get recruited to Brown/be accepted with the huge compensating factor of my sport.

I am currently a junior and these are the classes I plan to take this year.
AP French, AP Biology, AP US History, AP Literature, Pre-Calculus

Sophomore year:
AP European History (4), Film Studies, English 10, Chemistry, French 3, Algebra 2/Precalculus

(Keep in mind that every course my school offers is Honors. We are the top ranked private high school in the country).

GPA: Unweighted- 3.7

Now, for my tennis achievements:
I am currently a tennis coach at a D1 University (although I am only 16, I was asked to coach teens during the summer). I coach private lessons, play #1 for my varsity team, I am the team captain and have been #1 both years I have been on the team. Every year I have been #2 in my district and have made it to quarterfinals in my state tournament. Although I am not currently in USTA I plan to play tournaments this year. I currently play 10 hours of tennis per week, and 50 during the summer.

E.C.s:
9th- National Laureat for the National French Exam, Spirit Club member, French Club member, Dance Club member, JV Volleyball

10th- Mayor’s Fitness Council Student Ambassador, led the National Youth Summit, National Laureat for the National French Exam, Secretary/Treasurer for Spirit Club, NHS member, French Club member, Dance Club member.

11th- Community Service Club, NHS, Secretary/Treasurer for Spirit Club (probably VP), French Club (probably VP), lots of community service which is required for NHS.

Thanks to everyone for their responses in advance.

There are a lot of things coaches look for in tennis recruits, but the first things are USTA and Tennisrecruitingnet rankings.

Are you a high four-star or a five star on Tennisrecruiting.net?

You can get a good idea for the caliber of player Brown recruits by going to the rosters and then plugging those names into the USTA and Tennisrecruitingnet sites to see their pre-college records and rankings.

Brown tennis rosters currently have 9-10 players each. That should tell you there are usually 2-3 slots per year each for men and women. It is tough competition.

I’m not currently on tennisrecruiting.net due to my late start in USTA tournaments, although my head coach tells me I can definitely get up to 5 stars by my college app time. I’ll definitely start plugging those names into the site. thank you!

You are welcome. There are also lots of articles and tips on that site for tennis recruits. I would encourage you to start moving quickly to play USTA tournaments and get ranked. Others your age have done this and have already been contacting coaches and posting videos.

Your college application time will be about one year from now. To get from unranked to five stars (top 75 in the country) in one year would be a notable and unique achievement. Being unranked in USTA, you are going to be bracketed against the top seeds in the first rounds of USTA tournaments. Need to start pulling upsets early to move up the ladder. (If your coach PMs me, I might have a few things to say to him/her about offering assurances that any youngster can definitely do that)

And remember, your college application time is really not a milestone date to be shooting for. Ivy tennis coaches are typically deciding on slots from late spring to early summer each year, based on results that have been built up ahead of that time.

My opinions are based on having observed, close up, the D1 tennis recruiting process.

fenwaypark, if the OP is really a strong player it will only take a few tournaments to be ranked, since Tennisrecruiting only requires a few wins to be ranked-and it is the quality not the number of wins that count. For those not aware-the USTA structure requires loads of tournaments to chase points. Been through the last minute ranking with my nieces. They found that having experience going to States helped reduce nerves during the first few USTA tournaments. But it is true that recruiting for class of 2020 is well underway.

Maybe you meant to direct your comment to someone else? I never said anything to the contrary.

What I did say was:

I am standing by that. I think advice to the contrary is misleading. From unranked today to top-75 on Tennisrecruitingnet in the Class of 2016 by next spring would be a notable and unique achievement.

On the 2014-15 Brown women’s tennis roster, there are two freshmen listed. One was ranked #12 and the other #55 in the country for their senior year high school class on TRN. Men had five frosh!! (I am betting at least two were walk-ons). TRN rankings? 43, 49, 33, 90…and #5 in the UK 18 and under.

I cannot find anyone who went from unranked to five-star (top-75) in one year on TRN, just looking back a few years. But apparently you have, otherwise what would be the basis for your statement?
