Transferring to Brown

Hey guys,
This is my first time on this site! I’m a sophomore at the University of Maryland College Park and I’m not loving my school and I have done well so far academically. I’m hoping to transfer to Brown.

So from high school my stats aren’t very strong - -
a little above a 3.5 gpa
1250 SATs
BUT throughout my high school years I have been a very competitve tennis players. I wasn’t some kid who just played tennis after school or played on Varsity. I travelled around the country for tournaments and I was ranked pretty high.

My high school experience was this - spent my freshman year at high school in hometown. I spent my sophomore year at a tennis academy in Florida where I had to play tennis and train 4 hours a day every day of the school week.

I then spent my Jr. year in barcelona doing the same, training 4 hours a day everyday while going to regular school hours and played tournaments.

So thats pretty much my background for high school.

In college I have done well.

My gpa is above a 3.9 after three semester.
I am part of a couple national honors society.
I have done some community service but I’m not really part of any. I just volunteer when my schedule permits.
I am not on the tennis team here but I am very much a part of the Club Tennis team which is pretty competitive here seeing how our Men’s tennis is very good.

I’m working on the essays now and I believe I have some pretty good essays and good points.

So - - I know that Brown is a stretch but can I get some realistic opinions??

What are your concerns with your current institution?

OK, first reason I want to transfer is because Maryland is HUUGE. Like seriously it is enormous. By that I mean that it is physically big (very hilly and classes are far) and there are so many people. Having 25,000 people undergrad is just too much for me because I feel lost in the crowd.

Even more importantly, I don’t feel like I am part of something here. I feel like I could be taking classes anywhere. I want a college where I feel like I am in a real community and where people reach out to each other. I can go on and on about this “community,” but it’s just the idea that I want to go somewhere where i feel part of something greater than myself and I want to feel more of a connection to people.

Also, If i’m going to transfer then I want to go somewhere with great academics. I place I would feel proud to be and going to Brown, or a school like Brown, I will like I have really achieved something. Also Maryland is pretty far from my home, NY, so Brown is also much closer.

I guess those are my reasons in a nutshell (I know they are pretty unorganized.)
