Does Brown offer good finaid packages for transfer students? Also, is transfer admissions need-blind? or need-aware? thanks!

Here's the low down.

Transfer admission is need-aware. That means that they take your need into consideration in deciding whether or not to admit you. The year I applied (for 2005-2006), it was significantly, significantly harder to get in as a financial aid applicant (i have numbers if you want them). I can only imagine that funding for transfer aid has increased since then, thus making it less difficult. However, it is still a factor. If you are curious, call and ask how money is allotted for transfer financial aid and do some math. A typical aid package is 20K. About 50% of applicants apply for financial aid. I don't know how many people total are applying nowadays...

If you do get accepted, your full need (as determined by Brown) will be met.

It's all-or-nothing.

pm me if you have questions :)

some statistics (i've said this 4 or 5 times on this board)

when i applied, there were over 700 applicants. 350 applied for finaid (50%). 140 matriculated. I'm spitballing and gonna say 175 were accepted (25%). 20 matriculants were on financial aid (14%), despite the fact that 50% of applicants applied for financial aid.

I don't know exactly how to do the math here to find out the odds of a finaid applicant getting in versus a non finaid applicant, but it seems very clear that the non finaid applicant had a much, much greater chance.

Meanwhile, the 100 million dollar Sidney Frank Grant that year went primarily towards expanding financial aid for freshman (Sidney Frank scholars and such). While this is laudable, if only a small fraction of that (say another 400,000) was alloted to transfers, it would have doubled the number of finaid students that could have attended.

But can I reaaaally complain? Well, yeah. But not all the much, because at least they offer aid now where as before they didn't.

I will say though that I was this close holds fingers really really close together to withdrawing my finaid app because i wanted to go so badly and i knew how much harder it would be to get in. Which would have been an incredible financial hardship on my family, as I have substantial need. Like triple mortgage hardship. All I can say is I love my parents, and that I'm glad I didn't withdraw it!!
