If you have need, and you want to apply for FA, but you’re also willing to take on loans if Brown has limited funds to award you, would it make sense to apply for FA but also include a letter with your application noting your commitment to Brown regardless of how much they are able to award you?

It doesn’t work that way. They either admit you with a full financial aid package or they reject you.

What need-aware means is that they take your level of need into consideration when deciding to admit you / how much they want you. It sucks. I got in with need 8 years ago, the first year they re-opened financial aid for transfers (thank god) and at that point only had $400,000 alloted for transfer aid. Of the 100+ matriculating transfers, less than 20% were on financial aid, compared to the 60% of freshman on financial aid.

If you don’t apply for aid when you apply as a transfer, you cannot apply for aid once you are a student

This isn’t to discourage to you from applying. By all means, give it your best shot. But that letter won’t do anything because it’s not applicable. I also expect that much more money is available now for financial aid for transfers than there was 8 years ago, which greatly increases your chances as a financial aid applicant over what mine were.

Good luck!!

p.s. let me know if you have any other questions about transferring / applying to transfer.

Thanks! 10char
