Brown University - ACT 28

I just got my rejection letter from Duke a few days a go. Now I’m considering applying to Brown regular decision. I’m predicted 40 in IB and have great extracurriculars: South England soccer player, volunteer at blind college, created and am chief editor of the school newspaper, and so on.

I am at boarding school in England but grew up around the world-Zambia for the longest stretch- and my parents are now living in Nigeria. I have both an American and British passport. At Brown I want to study geography or a course they have that is similar to it (environmental studies?).

My concerns with applying are mainly because of my ACT scores. I received a 28 overall with a 10 in the writing section. It’s now too late to retake in time for the January deadline and after receiving my Duke rejection I’m not sure it’s even worth applying.

My question is if it sounds as though I have any chance of getting in and therefore should I apply? Or are my chances too low and I should stick to applying to other easier universities.

As an ordinary domestic applicant, you would stand little chance at getting into Brown with that ACT score. But if you are in a special category (athlete, URM, legacy, developmental, faculty kid, etc.), you might have a fighting chance, but the odds would still be pretty narrow.

Whether or not it’s worth applying is up to you and how much you care about the application fee and the time to write the essays.

A composite score on the ACT of 28 is below Brown’s 25th percentile for admitted students, according to their Common Data Set. Does your boarding school use Naviance? Your college counselor needs to meet with you ASAP to develop a realistic list of RD options.
