Brown University Class of 2019 RD Applicants

@oystershelleatme‌: Not everyone gets interviews. It’s just luck of the draw. There’s still about two weeks of interviews left - the reports are due in mid-February.

@oystershelleatme D got an interview and it went great but don’t sweat it if you are not able to arrange one. It was with an alum and even the interviewer admitted the interview does not count for much in the admissions process.

Another CA resident – no interview, no portal.

Deferred from Penn. Good luck everyone!

did anyone else get the thank you for your application/what to expect brown email, after getting their portal and interview? lol

@fizzy110 I got that email as well.

Still no email or interview here in San Francisco. Is that a bad sign?

@bluemeringue, if you don’t get anything by today (Jan 29th), you should call them, that’s what they said in their email. Interview reports are due February 15th, so there is still time for an alum to contact you. Don’t stress!

@fizzy110, thanks. I will follow up.

My D is in SF area. She got an earlier email about an interview day, which took place last weekend. She could not make it to that day but was given a separate individual Interview for this week. Got her portal on Monday and the email yesterday. I agree that you should call.

@TanTheeeta yeah sure I guess Indian citizen could count, but for the interview process its all about geography. So I guess I mean LIVING in India?

So, what does it mean when they don’t grant an interview? I realize that it might not count for much, but I’m a little concerned. There are plenty of alumni in San Francisco. And my son applied in early November.

I think it means there was an unfortunate combination of administrative circumstances that led to this result.

I know it does not mean that the result was based on an evaluation of the application.

EDIT: There is still time for an interview to occur

Thanks @fenwaypark Okay, that’s good to hear, although I wish they would respond and grant him an interview. We are actually traveling across the country to visit there in a couple of weeks, so I’d like to believe he has a chance of getting in …

Just had my interview and it went EXTREMELY well. I’m so excited to hear back from Brown

I had my interview last Saturday. I was not contacted directly by the interview, but by a local representative. It was at a school, and many interviews were also scheduled that day within time blocks of 25 mins each (mine was 30, and we had to end it). The interviews were conducted one-on-one in empty classrooms and I had no idea who my interviewer was until I opened the door – but, it went well
I also don’t think he had any information about me given to him prior. He asked my name (I don’t think as a formality), school, where I was form, etc. as well as basic questions: Tell me about yourself, why about Brown attracts you, what do you do in your spare time.
Oh and I got my portal the week before!

I just got an email about an interview… but it’s a phone interview. Ugh, I haven’t done any interviews over the phone.

At least you got an interview. Still no invitation for an interview even after writing the interview committee twice.

Y’all need to calm down about the interviews! They are not guaranteed, and not getting one does not mean that you are a weak applicant. There are simply too many applicants in a given year to give everyone an interview. It’s not feasible. Nagging committees and complaining to Brown are just going to make you look demanding and rude. Lots of kids get in without interviews, and plenty who interview get rejected. IMO, interviews are more for ensuring that Alums are connected to the school/feel pride for their alma mater (read: they’re more likely to donate $$). To get one is exciting. However, its role in admissions decisions is overrated.

I agree that this is one purpose for interviewing programs at all schools that conduct them. Whether it is the primary purpose or not, I cannot say. This opinion is based on the fact that interview programs are run by Alumni Offices rather than Admissions Offices and from reading other people’s opinions on various forums here on CC.

Agreed…based on what someone I know well has told me, and from personal experience observing interviewees during the sessions.

Yes, based on information included in my posts and the posts of many others in the pinned Interview thread in this forum

There is one thing I am not sure about though. And that is whether an applicant should inform the Office of Admission that an interview was not offered, so that the Office of Admission knows that the applicant did not turn down or fail to respond to an offer for an interview.

I think, can’t prove it, completely unsubstantiated opinion, that if an applicant turns down or does not respond to an offer for an interview it may be something that is considered. At the same time, I do not know if or how the Alumni Association informs the Office of Admission about applicants who were not offered interviews versus those who were offered but declined or did not respond.

Maybe someone else can help.

EDIT: Toward the end of the interview season, which this year is February 15, there are typically flurries of last-minute assignments to interviewers, usually for telephone or Skype interviews. I am not sure if these are to try to accommodate all those who were missed originally, or just those who were missed and expressed an interest in having an interview.
