Hey Everyone! I am an International applicant. My SAT1 score is 2230 and SAT2 is 1580/1600 (Math2 800- Chem 780). I have decent (maybe even good ecs), good essays and supplements, and (most probably) good recs. I have 4 As at A level(Phy,Chem, Maths, CS) and 8 A/As at O level. Brown is my first choice but I need full ride (as in I can only give up to 5000 US$ annually). I have been told that with that kind of need I will be waitlisted if not rejected straight out from Brown. Does anybody know if there are high chances of that happening?
Thanks!
P.S : My intended major is CS.
This is a totally absurd statement.
Admissions is fully aware of all why someone doesn’t get interviewed and can find out immediately if they need more info. Applicants do not need to “inform” admissions that they did not “turn down” an interview. If an applicant turns down an interview or fails to respond, the alum informs admissions of this fact. My source for this are the hundreds of applicant interview write ups I’ve seen and conversations with several admissions officers.
blue meringue asked: "So, what does it mean when they don’t grant an interview? "
Interviews at Brown don’t work this way. Brown doesn’t “grant interviews.” Interviews are not based on a student’s viability. Alums are assigned applicants and it’s the alumni’s responsibility to contact the student. Please read the FAQ thread about the interview process.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate the information. I read the FAQs. I was worried that there might be some hidden truth/agenda … It sounds like it’s not a reflection on the candidate’s qualifications.
First, you quoted incorrectly. Prior to what you quoted was this preface,“There is one thing I am not sure about though.” This indicates that the text you quoted immediately following this preface was a query not a “statement”. (It’s post #199 just a few back)
From my experience, if an applicant turns down an interview or fails to respond, the alum does not inform Admissions. I will not say that this information is “absurd” because that would be rude and not the way most people communicate in polite society. I would say it is inadvertently misinformed. The line of communication between interviewers and Brown goes through the Alumni Association, not through Admissions…according to my personal experience.
My point, which I guess I did not make very well is that if an applicant has not been offered an interview, I see no problem in contacting Admissions in a non-whiny, non-complaining, non-entitled tone and emphasizing interest in having one, even if by Skype or phone…if in fact this is true.
I do not know if Admissions will then contact the Alumni Association to get you hooked up, but even if they don’t, I think (can’t prove it) that your contact with the Admissions office would be seen as positive, or neutral at worst.
I have no affiliation with the Office of Admission, just my personal unsubstantiated (absurd?) opinion
^^I would not offer the same suggestion if it were January or earlier.
But here we are on February 3 and the deadline for interview submissions is February 15. At this late date, if no interview opportunity has been offered, my suggestion stands.
I hope someone can provide a contrary view so we have a balance of opinions…and let each applicant decide what feels right for himself or herself.
@bluemeringue I haven’t gotten an interview request yet, and I live in proximity to you (Bay Area). I’m not too worried though.
Thanks for letting me know.
I got the email update from Brown about being contacted by an interviewer, but still haven’t heard from an interviewer. I am officially crossing into panic mode- I have exams from the 26th and don’t know how I can handle preparing for an interview like this and for my mocks. :-SS
Actually I just got a phone call from a Brown alumni to schedule an interview! Mine’s next week. I didn’t get any interview notification beforehand, though.
Yeah I got the email about being contacted for an interview, but I haven’t gotten anything
Ditto. Just got it tonight.
Interesting. I thought you guys reported back on every applicants assigned to you.
Thanks for this correction. I mistakenly thought our reports went to the Alumni Association. But according to this information from the Interviewer’s Handbook, the reports go directly to the applicant’s file in the Admission Office.
Sorry for any confusion caused to applicants.
Anyway, bottom line, my previously expressed suggestion about what to do if no interview has been offered at this late date stands, welcome contrary opinions to be posted so applicants can assess both sides before making a decision.
Every interviewer completes an electronic form in which they are asked: “What was the outcome of this interview?” and the choices include “applicant did not want interview” and “did not hear back from applicant.” The form makes it crystal clear that this goes directly to admissions, along with any comments made by the alum.
Had my interview today, and I don’t know how else to describe it but awesome!! I can’t wait to hear back from Brown
Congratulations and good luck!!
I still haven’t been contacted for an interview. When is the latest they would organize one?
I was told on Friday that they will still contact people this week.
@dhizzy The due date for Brown alum interview reports is Feb 15th, so technically interviews can be conducted anytime up until this date.
I haven’t gotten an interview, but two of my friends did and its pissing me off so much.
