Hello fellow CCers I have been admitted to both of the schools, but I am having trouble deciding. I plan on majoring in Biology or Biochemistry and also Political Science. I want to either go to MD school or do the MD/PhD programs. I hear that JHU is stronger in the sciences but that Brown gives an overall better undergraduate experience. At the moment I am leaning towards Brown because of the open curriculum. I have a diverse range of classes I want to take and I feel Brown is the school that will allow me to with great ease. I have not made up my choice but I was wondering if I could get some feed back. Will I be at a disadvantage If I chose Brown over JHU?

JHU’s curriculum is also pretty open. It’s not the case that there are NO required classes, but the requirements aren’t strict at all. For example your major might require 5-10 specific classes but almost everything beyond that is up to you.

Both JHU and Brown are very strong. You can’t go wrong either way.

JHU puts about 25% of their student body each year in med school. I was given a number of 300+ out of their student body of 1350 for last year’s class.

From the Brown website: Brown consistently ranks among the top five colleges in the nation in the percentage of its applicants accepted to medical school, and these impressive records are similar in other areas of graduate study.

Brown is great. I met a premed student doing a double major with Public Policy. Very impressive (and he went to the Olympic trials too.) You will meet interesting people and have some great profs and many opportunities for undergraduate research. The open curriculum and grading system can be a lifesaver for overachievers.

Congratulations on the great choices. I’m sure JHU is great, but I just don’t know much about it. Visit the individual boards here to get an idea of the culture at each place–academic and otherwise.
