Brown vs. Johns Hopkins BME

Hello,

I recently got admitted to both of these wonderful schools and I’m struggling with my decision. I want to go to medical school and I was wondering if anyone out the could give me some advice.

Thanks in advance!

Brown. Although Johns Hopkins is a great school, the pre-med competition is fierce. Everybody wants to go to JH School of Medicine. And the profs can’t recommend EVERYBODY.

Besides, Brown is a great school too! And although pre-meds create competition everywhere, Brown is known for its lax student body.

“Lax” makes it sound like Brown is a second-rate school. Brown tends to select for self-directed students who happen to generally get good grades because they love to learn. Such students usually stand ready to help you when you need it, rather than see grades as a zero-sum game where you necessarily need to do worse for them to flourish.

wwhs, I am stuck in the exact same position! (Although, to be honest, I am not as set on doing pre-med.)

Out of curiosity, what are you planning to study if you do end up at Brown?

I think I want to concentrate in neuroscience or biomedical engineering. You?

JHU BME is the best in the world, hands down. Comparable only to USanFran.

Take that opportunity.

I was in the same position last year. In my opinion, if you are 100% positive you want to do BME, Johns Hopkins is the place. They seriously have an amazing program for it that fosters a collaborative environment. However, if you are not positive you will end up BME (I wasn’t), Brown may be better. Premed (outside of BME) at JHU is very intense from what I have heard. Many of their other programs are not as good as Brown’s programs. I chose Brown because I wanted to study and explore many different fields which is very easy at Brown (open curriculum). Brown offers many top departments which is what attracted me.

I ended up not liking engineering and dropped it after one semester. I also took a CS class first semester and absolutely loved it. Now I am looking at CS and somehow combining that with biology (possibly through research this summer at Brown).

Hopkins BME isn’t all that selective — five people were admitted from my school and they all turned it down.

Unless you’re really committed to BME, go with Brown.

ahah neuroscience as well! I don’t think I’ll pursue BME @ brown, but I do hope to double major, so I will most likely be taking on a second concentration.

ender94 - would you mind telling us a bit more about your experiences at Brown? Besides your CS class, how have you liked it/found it to be? And (I hope it’s alright to ask this) are you happy with your choice?

I absolutely love it here. The open curriculum is by far one of my favorite parts. First semester, I took 5 classes in 5 different departments. In total, I’ve taken classes in 7 departments (10 classes). For me this is great because at this point I am just taking classes that sound interesting. I like to joke that everyday I change my potential major.

We also have the option to take any class Pass/Fail. Taking classes Pass/Fail is actually encouraged here. Right now I am taking econ pass/fail because I want to learn the basics and take higher level classes but don’t want to worry about acing every test or homework.

The campus environment is also really amazing. The school is small enough where you bumped into people you know but you are constantly meeting new people.

I am very happy with my choice to come here. I am honestly happier here than I have every been. To be fair though, I would probably be happy at a fair number of places but possibly in different ways. Here, I can be relaxed and studious at the same time.

The average GPA needed to get into med school is 3.7. The average GPA at JHU is 3.26 and the average GPA at Brown is 3.63. You don’t need to be a neurosurgeon to figure out which school is best for premeds.
