hi everyone! i just got accepted into Brown and RISD, both my top choices, but i did not get into the Dual Degree program. This is basically the most difficult choice of my life and im freaking out (totally an understatement). So if you have a kind soul, PLEASE help me!
here are the facts:
- RISD gave me a lot of money. i don't know how much financial aid i am getting from Brown yet
- i want to have the "college experience" and be well rounded so that i can have options.
- i LOVE art but do not know if i want to pursue a career in it seeing that it would be difficult to do so in this era
- so maybe i should try architecture...not sure
- i also am trilingual and am president of my school's Human Rights club (a version of Amnesty international) and thus i am also considering International relations so i can travel
- brown is awesome. risd is awesome.
- i do not know which school will provide me with the best opportunities for the future,

i am obviously very confused...any words of advice or tales would help. Also, does anyone know how many classes at RISD i can take if i decide to attend Brown and vice versa if i go to RISD? thank you so much kind soul!

It gives you the opportunity to study whatever you want to. Its much broader than RISD and gives a better quality education (especially if you aren’t sure you want to pursue art).

How did you not get into the Dual Degree Program? I thought it was automatic if you got accepted to both!

Acceptance to Dual Degree Program is not automatic. After applicant is admitted to both Brown and RISD, there is a special committee that decides whether he/she is admitted to the Dual Degree. So there are 3 hoops to jump through - Brown, RISD and Dual Degree.

But congratulations on getting into Brown and RISD, that’s no small feat in itself! I agree with spanglish - Brown is a better choice unless you are dead set on career in art. You can take some classes in RISD, and art department in Brown is strong in its own right.

They may be next to each other, but that is where the similarity between RISD and Brown stop. They are very, very different experiences.

Brown is a pretty typical college experience–with very bright students pursuing a wide variety of diverse interests. RISD is an atypical college experience–everyone is into their art, pretty much 24/7. The students are very talented–but it is very easy to pick out a RISD student from a Brown student, even if they are walking next to each other (never have stereotypes been more accurate).

Unless you are 100% sure that art is your life, not just your thing, go to Brown.

Wow! thanks so much everyone for responding with such great answers/ advice! i know Brown and RISD students are SUPER different (I know what you’re saying about the stereotypes being accurate). thats one of the things i need to consider because to be quite honest i am not sure i would fit in at RISD (i come from an all girls catholic school so i am not exactly used to hardcore art lovers :/). Because i love art but don’t think i am obssessed with it to the point of just doing that, i think i am going to listen to you all and choose Brown.
Since i think i am 98% sure on Brown, all i need to do is wait for the financial aid packet so i am crossing my fingers!

ohh, my mom lives out of the country and she forgot to send in some papers to collegeboard and css lol. So i have to wait longer to get it but hopefully before May 1st.

I would also post on the visual arts section of CC, to get a more representative set of viewpoints (including people that know RISD and have a interest or passion for a career in the arts). Posting in this section will get you mostly “it’s a no brainer, go to Brown” given the nature of who posts here.
