Brown =\

Hi, I am currently a freshman at a top state school in NY. My GPA sucks badly due to poor choices of professors my freshman year (the guy was like 80, had a speech problem/nervous system problems, he really should have reitred), anyhoo I think this will severely ruin any chance of transferring. My spring semester so far, I am doing medicore, like maybe like 1 or 2 As, and the rest B's or above. I am also planning to take summer courses here to try to boost my GPA higher. The way I look at it, is I have summer and fall of 06 to redemn myself, possibly some spring.

I want to transfer to Brown of course, not just because it's a good school, but because I feel I belong there.
I am going to apply the end of my sophomore year, and hopefully get in as a jr transfer.

I WILL NOT BE APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID.

Some pluses:
I work at the college's academic advising office, doing various projects such as outreach to the students. I also plan to be a peer advisor starting fall semester. I will also get a great recommendation from my boss who is head of the academic advising department (we're both star trek geeks =P)
I participated in our school's collegebowl competition my freshman year. I qualified for my building, then my community, but i failed to qualify for the university team because I only ranked 8th, and not the top 6. I will give it a shot again sophomore year, hopefully some seniors will be gone and I will recieve a spot then. I have also made great friends with my current English professor, and she said she'll write me a great reccommendation. (would it help if I sent some of my writing samples from that class?)

Anything would be helpful, definitely.

I'm just really scared my GPA will ruin me. Thank you.

well, boost your gpa first.

and about..
"My spring semester so far, I am doing medicore, like maybe like 1 or 2 As, and the rest B's or above."

stop talking nonsense. you have like a few more weeks and finals left to bring all of your grades up to A's. don't think it's over and don't settle with B's. with that attitude, you're not gonna get into brown, nonetheless any top school or company when you graduate.

and how bad could your first semester have been? since "My GPA sucks badly" could be anything. i consider a 3.5 "sucks badly" in college. why didn't you just drop that one class?

anyways, i'm not trying to discourage you in any way. if your dream is to go to brown, go for it. my dream has always been to go to penn, and i still feel that my abysmal high school records will always bring me down. but even if i don't get in this year, i'll apply next year. and if i get rejected again? i'll apply there for grad school. just keep trying and work hard.

My college has some crazy drop deadline, where its like the 1st two or three weeks of school, we have not recieved any scores from this guy so I couldn't really make a decision. I also go to a top state school in NY, this college is known for being tough graders, unlike some universities i know. plus, I'm undecided, so I was feeling around a bit, and now I know for sure I don't want to major in certain areas.

Thanks for your input.

no problemmo. just browse around the forums and see what it takes to transfer into brown. but yeah, first thing you need to do is worry about your gpa and then all of the other stuff like making you stand out from other applicants. good luck!

A 3.5 sucks badly? Really? I think it depends on how you get it...

its lower than a 3.5 =\, lets just say its pretty low.

i don't think 3.5 is "sucks badly". in most colleges 3.5 is above average. well i guess if you are going to a big state-school where alot of unmotivated and academically not curious kids go, 3.5 might seem bad if grade inflation is also taken into consideration. But if you are going to say top20 universites and LACs, 3.5 is above average of the school's student body who are also above average.

p.s. if Brown is your prospective transfer school, i'd agree 3.5 is really low.

well, the school i'm going to notorious for not inflating our grades. I personally regret that I could just go to a crappier school and getting a 4.0. really, one of the reasons I want to transfer is because they don't care about the students... professors don't want to be in their office hours and if you e-mail them, they get mad plus the TA's are all international so you can't understand them.

Also... I would assume that professors in private schools would care about their students more (they get paid more)... so their grades would probably be higher than state schools. I mean doesn't Brown have a thingy where if you get a lower grade than a 2.0, then its automatically wiped off your transcript? At my school, you get what you get and it stays there forever. and ever =p

you slacker. you blame an old man for your own personal failure to obtain excellent grades.

theres only one person to blame for your actions and thats YOURSELF.

^ kinda true...

you can get an A in any class, regardless of professor, subject, curriculum etc. you just need to know how things work, be shrewd and study approbriately for it.

oh by all means, I'll take what I got. I know I didn't make the extra effort to see him after class or anything. it is my fault entirely. what i realize now is my mistake and i plan to correct it.

Sometimes, the ones marking your work ARE the ones to blame.

I'm taking a philosophy course to satisfy my distribution requirement. The course only has 3 things: an in-class test, an essay and the final exam.

TA's mark the first two so they are responsible for 60% of our overall mark. And the TA's are @******s. They don't give you any comments, just a crappy grade. Even the prof says they were to harsh in marking.
