I am a 17 year old latino male from the Bronx New York, currently I am a liberal arts major and I plan on transferring to Brown University from a two year Community College. I know it is real hard to transfer to a ivy league school especially from a CC, but I am willing to try anyway. I want to transfer to Brown because I feel like I will be in an environment where everyone is striving to reach their maximum potential and the idea of being surrounded by a lot of intellectual people has fascinated me ever since I can remember.

GPA:
I have not completed a semester yet therefore I do not have an official GPA yet. I have all A's in the classes i'm taking so far, but unfortunately I didn't do so well in my Statistics midterm and in that class I have an A-. That A- might change to an A but as of right now, i'll guess that my GPA is around 3.85.(I know that's not impressive)

Extracurricular Activities
-College Discovery Program
-Student Government Association (running for student rep.)
-Phi Theta Kappa
-Chi Alpha Epsilon

In high school I was a very mediocre student besides the fact that I was a member of a program called Gauss Honors, this program helped me graduate high school in three years instead of four. My GPA was a 3.0 and I had mid 1300s in my SATs.

I am currently studying to retake the SATs, I am aiming for a near perfect score. What do you think my chances are with getting into Brown? Do you have any advise on what I can do to raise my chances? is this even possible if my GPA is around a 3.9 and what are some schools you recommend I apply for that has a similar vibe/environment. Any advise is gladly appreciated, thank you.

ps- My counselor told me I am wasting my time studying to retake the SATs, he told me that colleges don't look at that after high school is that true?

Colleges certainly look at the SATs, however it is less important for transfer students. The main event colleges look for is an upward trend, which you demonstrate.

That said, Brown is hard to transfer to, so it would be a reach especially since your ECs are not that impressive.

Grats to you for doing so well in college. You should be proud. I think you’ve got a shot at Brown if you write good essays that express you passion, and change in mentality. Higher SAT scores definitely help. But remember that even if you don’t make Brown, there are definitely other top schools that would accept a hard worker like you.

bubbles, I appreciate your reply. I took what you said into deep consideration but can you give me an example of an EC that is considered impressive?

Cats, thank you for replying. I really did appreciate your comment but I do think you are being overly optimistic. Do you really think I have a shot at Brown if I re-take the SATs and score higher? What else do you suggest I do to improve my chances?

To an extent, your counselor is right- its hard to “study” for the SAT’s, since the test is based on what you’ve learned throughout your school career. What I would recommend is taking a mock SAT, looking at areas you’re having trouble with, and focusing on those areas alone to boost your score some. In regards to your score, are you answering just the questions you know, or are you guessing as well? Guessing usually detracts from the score a lot.
What I would recommend instead of transferring from a CC into Brown is applying to a decent university, studying hard and having a high college gpa your freshman year, and then try to transfer.

Yes, I did guess on some of the questions that I wasn’t very sure on, and do you recommend I re-take the SAT’s even though I am already in a CC? Would it boost my chances to transfer into a better school?

I think that if you ace your SATs and get a perfect GPA you’ll have a shot. Maybe like a 10% chance, max. Brown and other schools are very hard to transfer for for any student, and with all of these other things going on it might prove a bit difficult for you. That said, I encourage you to try! I hope you do make it. You should also consider transferring into another good school (maybe a top public one like Ohio, Mich, Wisconsin, etc.), graduate from there, then maybe go to Brown or something for grad school. Good luck!

I thought so to Pumpkin, unfortunately I was misinformed and told to go to a CC first because it was supposably easier to get into schools if you transfer in lol, I should’ve done my homework on that.
