Brownies vs. Brunonians

Which one do you prefer to call yourself? =)

I like brunonian personally.

ive never heard anyone use Brownies at Brown, that sounds silly

everyone who goes to or went to brown goes by brunonian

Brownies exists only on this webpage. We are Brunonians.

That’s not 100% true. Some people from other schools call us Brownies. With that said, outside of this page, I’ve never seen a Brown student want to be called a Brownie…

I’ve only ever been called a Brownie by non-Brunonians.

That’s interesting, and would be real good to note for before I visit later this month. A quick google search let me know that Brunonian comes from the name of Brown’s mascot. Why do you call yourselves Brunonians as opposed to Bears (like how USC students would call themselves Trojans or UNC students would call themselves Tar Heels)?

The name preceded Bruno the Bear by quite a bit and was actually used as a Latin version of Brown.

The university is referred to as Brunonia in the alma mater (written in 1860) early publications (at least as far back at 1829 according to Encyclopedia Brunoniana), etc. Bruno wasn’t around until the 1920s and the Bear wasn’t even our mascot until the 1880s/1890s.

We are the Brown Bears, but Brown is Brunonia and thus, Brunionians is what we go by.
