Public Service Announcement re: Bears

Dear freshly admitted students,

Yes, technically, Brown’s mascot is the bear. That bear has a name, though, that makes it unique relative to the 15 million other schools and teams that have a bear as their mascot. So, contrary to (your) popular belief, the simple truth is that “bear” is not invoked very often in common parlance. Thus, I’m providing a simple Phrase Readjustment Manual for your perusal. Others are welcome to add to it.

“Brown Bears” (referencing students) -> “Brunonians”
“Go Bears!” -> “Go Bruno!”
“I’m so excited to be a Brown Bear!” -> “I’m so excited for SexPowerGod!”

This is so true. Also, for everyone who asks me why my username on this site is Bruno14, read the above post. I am not male, and my name is not Bruno. I am a Brunonian of the class of 2014.

Also, per modestmelody:

"The name preceded Bruno the Bear by quite a bit and was actually used as a Latin version of Brown.

The university is referred to as Brunonia in the alma mater (written in 1860) early publications (at least as far back at 1829 according to Encyclopedia Brunoniana), etc. Bruno wasn’t around until the 1920s and the Bear wasn’t even our mascot until the 1880s/1890s.

We are the Brown Bears, but Brown is Brunonia and thus, Brunionians is what we go by."

modest is the expert, even in absentia :)
