Bryn Mawr RD Decision Threads 2019

Our daughter also waitlisted at Wellesley, but accepted to Bryn Mawr. @robotrainbow‌, You might want to schedule an appointment with the counselor at her school to get more information about her application. They may not tell you anything, but possibly could shed light on how she compared to other students. Also possible, something really was amiss or in error, and a call to a college could be made on her behalf.

Our daughter’s stats: 4.0, first in class, SAT: 800r, 730m, 750w. 2280, subjects: 800, 740, 750, APs 5s and 4s, 8 AP classes total, lots of academic awards within school, nat’l merit finalist, captain varsity tennis, good community service, but nothing huge, some clubs, but no leadership positions, white, no hooks. She is a really nice, quiet, brainy kid who loves to learn, and her teachers prob gave excellent recs. Expressed interest by visiting and interview with admissions officer who came to our town. Received Presidential scholarship. Accepted to Davidson, Wash U, SMU; waiting on Rice, Emory, Haverford.

@robotrainbow, are you full pay? I wonder how much need might have factored in to my own daughter’s waitlist status. since BMC is not need-blind.

I agree with @ccshak‌ , I think level of interest was a huge influence. When I did my interview, I let them know how obsessed I was with BMC. My stats were just sorta “eh”, but I was/am seriously in love with BMC.

Just to prove my point, here are some of my stats:
GPA: 3.4 UW, 3.6 W
SAT I: 2140
SAT II: BioE: 770, MathII: 790
APs: Bio 5, Psych 5, Chinese 4
ECS: best ones were an unpaid internship at Stem Cell Company, Nationally Tested Piano Player for 10 years, etc.
Essays: decent, but not Nobel-prize worthy.

I have seen a couple of users in previous CC threads that were accepted to Wellesley and waitlisted at Bryn Mawr. There was even one person on tumblr that said they were accepted to UChicago and waitlisted at BMC. I believe stats served as a prerequisite, but beyond that they were not a deciding factor, your displayed interest in BMC was.

D got accepted, 3.8/4.0 W GPA, with 7.5K Bryn Mawr grant. She declared test optional and didn’t send in SAT score.

@guitargirl8597 Statistically it seems hard to get off BMC’s wait list because statistically, most people just leave it - they accept their place on the list and then don’t do anything. Of the people Bryn Mawr takes off the wait list, based on purely empirical evidence, I’d say that almost all of them do something - send an extra, well-thought-out letter, updates, etc.

@PlasticNebula Ok, thank you for your help! That definitely makes sense.

Hey thanks for the replies. It is nice to know it wasn’t just her that they just didn’t like her. Bryn Mawr must have had a flood of applications this year because big city schools are hot. My daughter did two visits and an interview to Bryn Mawr. She was also waitlisted to Wellesley and she did an overnight there. Bryn Mawr was her second choice fortunately her first was Smith where she got accepted to early write. I’ll tell her it wasn’t just her that was waitlisted. Schools are totally uncertain of their yields these days because like my daughter, people are applying to many schools. Someone will come off the wait list. It means they think you would be a good fit just not enough room. We are just waiting for financial aid info from Smith. She also got a scholarship to Mary Washington we at. looking st

I haven’t applied FA during application, and I wonder what is the scholarship policy for current students in BMC?

congratulations Mawrters!!! dat name doe ;))
hopefully we’re all together this fall…can’t wait!

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I was wondering if someone could please explain (or direct me to an explanation of) Bryn Mawr’s presidential scholarship? I’m wondering if that’s the need-based FA or if it’s a separate merit scholarship or some combination of the two. I’m assuming it’s something everyone is automatically considered for?

OH MY GOD all you guys have to see this!!! it’s so cute, I legit nearly cried.

(I’m very emotional. good luck to my future roommate)

Oh my gosh that video! My best friend is in the Night Owls!

@srabookworm I’m fairly certain the Presidential Scholarship is merit aid. One does not need to apply for, nor be eligible for financial aid to get it. And yes, automatically considered for without a separate application. Hope that helps!

@menongirl That video is so cute! And it reminded me of some of the cute traditions Bryn Mawr has.

@Dawnpaige Thank you! In that case, I’d assume it’s non-renewable?

@srabookworm I think the amount is for up to 8 semesters, at least according to the Web site section on merit aid. Hopefully the letter/packet will explain more because Bionic definitely lacked info! We only found my D’s merit info because someone on this board helped me find it. LOL!

@robotrainbow‌ My D got accepted at but waitlisted at Smith which showed her at 85% acceptance chance. She doesn’t take standardized test well. Waitlisted at Barnard, Accepted MHC. 4.0 GPA unweighted, 4.8 GPA weighted, 1950 SAT, lots of community service. BMC was her top choice anyway but I told her to apply to a few to compare.

Well as I have said before, stats aren’t completely predictive. So many people obsess over stats and all of those prediction sites…but they don’t mean much. Obviously if you have a 2.0 GPA, you are going to have a harder time. But once you’re over a certain bar (which is not well defined at ALL) it comes down to immeasurable factors like extra curricular activities and essays.

So glad that she is interested in Bryn Mawr, though - can’t wait to see her at the Duck Pond Run

Does anyone know when the Bryn Mawr waitlisted acceptance results are coming out?

National Reply Day is May 1st, so the admissions staff will not start looking at the wait list until after that.
