Congratulations!
Congratulations @twinsmama and @hellomaisy!
I haven’t looked here in a while and such good news! My DS has sent off four EA/rolling applications. I can see on naviance that the BS has submitted initial materials for two of those with the rest still saying pending. He’s already gotten some good responses even though he just sent them off about a week ago. One replied in just a few hours with an invitation to apply to honors college and another for a “scholar type” program as well. He’s happy about this, however, it means more essays!
He is submitting two more rolling?EA schools with deadlines of 11/1.
I’m really interested in hearing that people are already hearing about money. I was expecting that we wouldn’t hear about potential merit or even financial aid until at least early winter. It would be so nice for him to get some significant decisions out of the way early. His top choice is one of the rolling admissions Universities and he’s saying that if he can get some good merit money that he will accept. I think he’s hoping that he won’t have to submit any more applications to the places which are a bit lower on his list. I would love it if we didn’t have to pay anymore application fees. I had no idea that it cost for each ACT score to be sent to each college! I’m almost hoping that he doesn’t do better on the most recent ACT as then I won’t have to pay another 13$ for each one to be submitted to the four which have already been sent!!
I think that it is Colby that allows self reporting of the test scores with formal acceptance contingent upon providing the official score. That seems very reasonable to me.
Yes, @Temperantia , that is right. Part of Colby’s initiative to be more accessible. I think it’s a great move. Maybe one that others will follow. Not unlike Bowdoin’s decision to go test optional decades ago.
7D2 sent in her ED app last week, and I told her to use her debit card to pay for it. She was surprised that it was so expensive ($85 in this case). I told her, now imagine paying that fee 9 times (which is what we did for her sister). And that’s not even counting the test score sending fees.
ETA: I reimbursed her in clothing the next weekend…so a net gain for her.
$1994.50 in total for me. It seemed fine when I was paying one at a time, but when I first added them all together - Yikes!! Although the total was skewed by a lot of AP exams.
You could buy a new pair of Stocklis (and a few lift tix) for that much, no?
And how about dem IB test fees??? Just got 7D2’s bill for this year’s crop…I had conveniently forgotten how much they can add up to.
So true.
Congrats @twinsmama and @hellomaisy, great news
Best of luck to all seniors trying to meet a Nov. 1 ED/EA deadline!
My senior decided not to apply ED, thereby compressing all of my stress (not hers!) into Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. Joy.
Early apps were in on Friday, although there has been a last-minute flurry of worry and hurry because one teacher didn’t get his recommendation in until last night or this morning. D was convinced (falsely) that her first-choice school would not consider her application if all letters weren’t in on time. Also, she has been working and worrying over arts supplements and various other things. I had to talk her down from the ledge a couple of times. As for me, now that everything is pretty much in for the early app, I feel a deep contentment in knowing that my children were able to pull it all off and get it done. The rest of the process will be much easier now…a few essays that can be partial rewrites of what they have already done, maybe a few more interviews. I am proud of them.
@twinsmama I can commiserate with your daughter; I too was a bit dismayed by the waiting until the last minute approach that the school took in sending their part of the materials. DS got his apps and essays and transcript requests in WEEKS early (most by Sept 30…) and the school waited until - literally - Oct 30 to submit the Nov 1 deadline school’s material. As someone who hates leaving things to the last minute…grrrrrr. It took a LOT of restraint to not call the counselor myself. But DS kept in touch, and we were both happy to see that the materials were reported sent today. I’m encouraging him to think no more of college apps these next two weeks and focus solely on finals.
Late to the ED/EA party but still, congratulations to @hellomaisy and @twinsmama!
@hellomaisy: At George School, they have a policy of 2-week turnaround on transcripts, etc. after the kid submits his/her portion of app. I think to protect themselves from a wave of kids lining up on Oct. 31 requesting transcripts for ED deadline, etc. Those two weeks felt like two years, but they did make good on their commitment.
@hellomaisy I was less restrained and was on the phone to both the college counseling office and the first-choice college yesterday morning. Luckily, all was well by that time (because I am not very effective on the phone when I am upset!).
On the flip side, from a text message with skimom mid-November 2014:
skimom: How are you doing on your applications for - what’s it called - Early Answer?
Me: They’re called Early Action, and they were due two weeks ago.
skimom: Oh.
Half hour later:
skimom: So, did you send them?
Me: 8-|
I’ve posted hints in the athletic recruit sub-forum, so may as well come out and share the news among my BS peeps: 7D2 knows where she is going to college and is signing her NLI tomorrow, the first day of the early signing period.
It’s been a long road with plenty of ups and downs and twists and turns…but a great outcome in the end.
