I recently got accepted into the bs do program at geneseo with nyitcom and wanted to know if I should go? I want to become a surgeon and going to a DO school worth it?
Ten percent of the Doctors in Maine have their DO from University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. I have two army veteran friends who have two shoulder and one knee operation between them. The VA had already tried two of the shoulder operations (RPG injury) and had given up so he went off on his own and paid for the surgery on the private market with the DO. My own daughter is a disabled Nurse with two shoulder, one knee and one hip operation from the same DO. All the HY MDs are down in Boston, where I assume, the pay is better.
Do you want to be a Doctor or do you want an MBA? My dorm mate Freshman year wanted both so he picked up his MD at Harvard and followed up with an MBA also at Harvard. Last I heard he owned a chain of Pediatric Centers in Washington State. A roommate put on his med school applications that he wanted to offer medical services in undeserved areas and was accepted at three out of three Medical schools. He went to University of Connecticut Medical School and ended up in psychiatric services at The Center for Living in Hartford CT. They take care of the well healed from around CT and the world.
What do you mean by “worth it?”
If you mean, “can I practice good medicine,” you can go DO or MD. It might be easier, but not impossible, to sell your medical services as an MD in Boston, NY, LA, etc.
