Sorry, I misread that. I saw opt out, which confused me. Absolutely. I am waiting to hear from my other programs, but right now, Brooklyn College/SUNY Downstate is really growing on me. I am in NY, so my tuition is dirt cheap, even for the med school, and SUNY Downstate has fantastic placements. I also love that I have easy access to Manhattan, and thus, going back home is a breeze. Although I do want to do engineering, and although I do have great money to other really nice engineering schools, I think that having a seat, even with an MCAT and GPA requirement, is worth a lot, especially with the changes in the MCAT, the combination of MD and DO pools, and the sheer number of people who want to go into medicine. It’s a running joke at one of the SUNY schools that every single person there is a pre-med student. And, to a point, some of that is true. Giving up a program would really be a difficult choice to make.

P.S. I don’t really believe that giving up a program to take the chance on more “prestigious” or “better” med schools in the future is a worthy trade off. Just because we are getting into these programs, we are not GUARANTEED a seat in medical school by going the traditional route. Honestly, nobody really is.

I just feel that umkc is a better fit for me because it has a lot of advantages and two of my family members attend there… They like it alot so I feel more comfortable I guess and where r u from pgans?

Anyone know what’s going to happen to the BS/MD programs reqs when the MCAT changes? Can we take the MCAT before it changes and still be eligible for med school since MCAT scores are valid for like 3 years?

I’m pretty sure you can take it whenever but it’d be pointless if you didn’t take gen chem, orgo, bio, and physics. I’ve already done everything except orgo 2 so I’m considering taking it next year.

I know BU said they will strongly recommend their students to take biochem (and probably stats, sociology, and psychology), and they might change the score required. If I end up going there, I will see if they accept the old MCAT since I’m taking it in May (have done all the pre req classes)

@satrocks You got an interview? Sorry about that. Their main push was volunteering, which I heard from a number of people. My stats are on page 27.

@Thebombingrange, I saw on a different post that you also interviewed at sophie davis. After being accepted to Brooklyn BA/md, is sophie still a choice for you if you’re accepted? Btw, you’re stats are great and I’m not surprised your acceptances.

I also got into Brooklyn BA/MD. Dr. Silbering seemed really interested in my non-medical extracurriculars (sports & acting). I feel like I spent more time talking about those than my actual clinical volunteering experience.

@Insanemom Thanks, but I only have one acceptance so far. Hoping for some more, though! I don’t think I would entertain Sophie Davis anymore because Brooklyn College has a much higher success rate than Sophie Davis on the USMLE Step 1 (Sophie has a 70% pass rate) and Brooklyn is a guaranteed seat with the requirements, while Sophie sometimes is unable to place 2-3 of their students in med schools per year. Also, I am white, which is not exactly what they take at Sophie. Even though my interviews there were fantastic, BC is a different environment, and I would rather go there.

@malibubeach Yeah my interviewer, the Dean of the School of Arts, really was excited when I mentioned that I played trumpet. Then we got started on an entire conversation about how art and medicine can merge and interact with each other… they like well rounded, volunteer-oriented people at BC, which is pretty fitting for me. The non-science major doesn’t thrill me, but I would manage. And yes, Dr. Silbering is a pretty awesome guy. I’m assuming you interviewed with him, I only saw him for a few minutes.

In the Brooklyn program, you can major in anything you want (including a science) as long as you major/minor in something else like humanities. I’m actually strongly considering Brooklyn too as a second choice behind Boston

Yes I did, those notifications are coming out on Friday. I am hoping to get it at Brooklyn College so tuition will be free. A majority of the kids in the BA/MD program are also Macaulay.

@tinkerbell13 I haven’t hear anything yet, it’s killing me. I already know that I’m going to UConn (can’t afford anywhere else lol) but if they would just send out those freaking letters…
