*** BS/MD Interview Notification for Class of 2014***

i would agree with @medicalboy about residency being more important that the medical school itself. ive written research papers for school on medical schools and their structure in addition the relationship btwn them and residency-selection. from what ive read, residency programs look for the individual merit of the student more than the name of the medical school-though im sure that certainly can’t harm the student. but the curriculum is pretty standard across medical schools so in the end it would still come down to scores on boards, grades, and interviews. actually, almost every physician ive talked to recommends going to a state school and state medical school for the sake of reducing the debt i leave school with.

Actually, I’m a retired Doc with a personal interest in the process…but I’ve been very deep into the mix over the years for a variety of reasons!

oooh, well thank you so much for sharing your insight with us!

@MedicalBoy, i do agree with all that you said. I simply meant that the level of education at a medical school matters too (like choosing between UMKC and Drexel for instance). I would just like to compare the ones I get into and pick the med school that has a good background in students getting accepted to the residency programs I’m thinking about, you know? But money is definitely a big deal too! I mean my parents are responsible for me right now and i feel bad even having them pay for my SATs and application fees let alone all of college!

@GreenSage That is why I said in my previous post that I need to find a balance between financial burden and education. I’m just trying to make the point that you shouldn’t jump right into a specific school just because it is “prestigious”.

@tropixx Oh wow. Never would have guessed that lol. Thanks for sticking with us.

@tropixx

You are a very smart kid and I am sure will get in to a good program this year. But please do not confuse your fellow applicants by saying that you are a retired doc. The other kids are sharing their knowledge and experience truthfully so hope you will do the same but not mislead others.

I am sure one day you will be a retired dic, but not right now…:)

I took over my son’s “web ego” last year as he no longer participates in internet social media…his choice, by the way to not participate…I thought that it would be an opp to pass on some wisdom and follow the process. He no longer speaks and he ask that I not speak for him!

I am a 60 year old, retired Doc, that has been there and done that with considerable success and have a breadth of perspective, from pre-teen to post fellowship: in the spirit of complete disclosure!

Good deal haha

Nice, Doc. Tropixx, please keep on giving.

Another note, your location and retiree status make us all envy.

interview notifications for UMKC come out in Mid December. Does anyone know the scheduled dates for the actual interview?

@Tropixx

Thanks for the clarification. It does make sense now. Thanks for your valuable input.

@docstudent, it’s mid-december if you applied by october 15th. if you applied by november 1st, you’ll be notified in january. Therefore, I am assuming the interviews themselves won’t be until late january or feb.

For those of you who have been to NJIT already, do you know if they have an orchestra? Do they share facilities with Rutgers for student organizations?

What did you guys think? I felt my interviews went very well, they were all fairly laid back and conversational, and it was great to have a chance to talk with so many current students, both at the undergraduate schools and at NEOMED itself.

I thought the interview at NEOMED was really cool, very interesting, and definitely unique. Overall I enjoyed that one the most by far, and I felt it was pretty low pressure.

Anybody else go this weekend? What did you guys think?

My daughter did. She would agree that they were laid back and conversational. She was confident that she did well. NEOMED has been her goal for a few years now so it looks like we will know if she has attained it soon. After we got home she said she could have done more interviews if she didn’t have the waiting period between them. Haha. I was ready to go home.

Test taker are you applying many other places? Do you think you will attend NEOMED if accepted? I honestly can’t think of anything that would sway my daughter from NEOMED. Do you have a strong preference of undergrad?

@Midhelper- I have no idea, sorry!!
TCNJ called to schedule an interview yesterday, just a heads up for those who applied.
Penn State also JUST updated my account with “We will be notifying Jefferson Medical College of your candidacy, and they will be in contact with you regarding an interview at Jefferson.”
Good luck guys! :)

starlight27: what were your SAT stats?

Does anyone know when interview notifications for the RPI/Union/Siena-AMC programs go out?

Last year dates for three AMC programs point to January. The RPI web-site indicates starting January!

starlight27…yes, curious about SAT scores?

asapaj5 - If you status changed, then you will get the interview. At this point it is just a formal email that will come to you inviting you for an interview. Penn state selects the 130 students. Not the med school.
Congratulations. Call and find out the date so that you can book your flight tickets. All interviews will be on 1 day only and no scheduling is allowed. The flights there are expensive depending on where you live.
