BS/MS-Biology

Does anyone have any details on the four year BS/MS Biology program at Emory? Is it worth it? How consuming is it? Is there any time for a life or is it constant studying? Do you have to be selected to be a part of it or can anyone decide to take this route? thanks in advance :)</p>

Only a few students in each class do it each year (maybe 2 or 3), and from what I’ve heard the only real difference in course load is during your senior year, when you have to take several grad level classes while everyone else just doing the BS is mostly done with the major. The first three years the course load is mosly the same as everyone else. The most time-consuming part will be doing research to complete the Masters thesis, which again will also be done during senior year and requires previous research experience and spending lots of time in the lab (so you’ll definitey want to join a lab very early on). You do have to take the GRE and apply to get in, but most self-motivated students who have a reasonaly high GPA (not sure if there’s a minimum cutoff) and are on track with their Bio classes and have research experience prior to senior year should have a good chance of getting in.

Also, the Chem department here also has a 4-year BS/MS if anyone is interested.

It’s most useful for those going for a PhD or MD/PhD, or just wanna get a job after graduating (you"ll usually get paid more for having the MS). For those who want to go to med school (just MD), just having the MS degree doesn’t give you much of an edge in the admissions process (the research experience is definitely helpful when applying to med school, but there are easier ways to get it).
