How bad are Bs for a top university? I have 5 recorded Bs on my HS transcript. However, my overall GPA is not too bad (3.87-3.9some). I know a few Bs won't kill chances, but I still feel a little uneasy. If you were admitted to a 'prestigious' college, how many Bs did you have in which courses/year?? I may be over thinking it but the fact that college is so close really struck me a few days ago. Thanks!!

Depends what class it was in, how difficult your high school is, etc. I don’t think it’ll kill you since your GPA ended up pretty good, but top schools really do need top grades. Try to bring them up as much as possible with the remainder of this year and the beginning of next year.

Thanks again, Remote!
I guess my main question was whether colleges look at the overall GPA versus the specific grades within the applicant’s transcript. They say a 3.8-4.0 GPA is solid for a top school, but at my HS, a 3.8 could either be 8 B+s or 15 A-s (or something like that)…

Oh wow, didn’t even realize that these were posted by the same person. It’s 1:42 AM and I guess I’m more tired than I thought. Anyway, colleges see both the overall GPA and the individual final grades in classes and both are important in determining your academic ability. If you get a B in English in 9th grade, science in 10th grade, math in 11th grade, and social studies as a senior, I’d imagine it doesn’t look nearly as good as if you get a high B in English every year because it just isn’t your strong suit but you try as hard as you can in the class. It’s very situational.

In that case, then I guess I’m alright. All Bs were received in math courses or electives, but I did fine in the math portion of the SAT I/IIs. A few Bs won’t look as good as a 4.0, but oh well!

And yeah, I am super tired as well…
