Bsc 2010

How is bio 1 compared to chm 2046? Are the labs as dreadful? Is it mostly regurgitation?
Also, has anyone taken Russian? If so, how was it?

I took Bio 1 in Spring 2009, so things may have changed.

When I took it, there were three parts to the course (and three exams): cellular biology, genetics, and evolution. The tests were pretty much all memorization/regurgitation, with the exception of Exam #2 (genetics), which had a pretty respectable problem-solving portion (good for quantitative folks like me, bad for the typical pre-med). Your grade was based solely on the three exams (no homework, etc.).

I’m not good at memorizing things, so I had to study quite a bit for it. I found CHM 2046 easier (although as I mentioned, I am more math-oriented so CHM comes easier to me).

I found the lab horrendously boring and time-consuming, even more so than CHM 2046 due to the slow pace. Also, you had to write a couple lab reports which I seem to remember being around 10 pages. However, they completely re-vamped the labs by the next semester when I took Bio 2, and they’re quite a bit easier now (still a lot of BS work though).

I took Bio 1 last semester (Spring 2010) and there were three instructors who taught 3 different sections of the course, which are the same as the reply above. There are sections of Bio 1 though that only have one teacher, Darner, who is more difficult than the 3 different instructors (or so I’ve heard). In my class the exams made up the most of your grade but there were also some online homework points and extra credit point with the clicker. I’m taking CHM2046 now with Horvath. I think the difficulty of this class depends on who you get as your instructor and also if you take it during summer (don’t take with Horvath during summer- all the exams are free response and so hard!)

Bio 1 lab is so slow and I had done a lot of the experiments in high school, but that also meant it was relatively easy. CHM2046L is A LOT more work. There aren’t lab reports, but instead things called Unknowns in which you are given two unknown substances and you have to prepare a scheme to discover the ions in the substances. Theses are also timed. Overall, I’d say CHM2046 is much harder than Bio 1 but still doable.

medwell & ufgatorgrl:
Are you all pre-med students? or whats you’r major?

yeah, chm 2046L was the worse course I ever took. I still pulled out with an A, lol.
