How does the Pre-business Honors program at BSU compare to Kelley at IU?

I am currently in the Pre-Business Honors Program at BSU, so I can hopefully give some useful insight on this topic.

The Pre-Business Honors Program accepts about 20 students each year. Each incoming class is typically made up of 10 Miller Scholars and 10 Honors Students. The only difference is the very generous Miller Scholarship.

Miller Scholars receive a scholarship for full tuition, along with a $4000 study abroad stipend, a laptop, and a $500 internship stipend to cover travel/living expenses. Everyone in the program also gets academic and career advising.

Additional benefits of the program include company visits, job shadows, resume preparation, and travel experience. The Miller College is currently setting up a summer field study to London, Paris, and Rome!

I chose Ball State over IU because of the personal attention. The business honors classes are taken with the group of 20 students, so you get to know them very well. College courses become much easier when you have 19 other honors students to work with on a regular basis.

As for the students–it is a very bright group. Most of us were accepted into Kelley and other top schools (Brown, Duke, etc.). My class alone includes multiple valedictorians. However, you don’t need to be a valedictorian by any means to be accepted into the program.

LASTLY, as cliche as it sounds–always give 110% wherever you decide to go. A few honors students have been rewarded for their hard work and been “promoted” to Miller Scholars. Working your tail off is well worth it.

How is the regular pre-business at BSU? Is it worthwhile or is Honors only on par with UI? What other business programs did you look at and choose BSU over? My daughter is lookng at Miami and Dayton and maybe Otterbein for business. Any comparison info you have would help. Thanks.

Ball State’s business program doesn’t get the credit it deserves, especially compared to the other schools in Indiana. IU, Purdue, and Notre Dame are viewed as superior programs. I won’t that this is completely wrong, but the education you get at Ball State is very worthwhile.

I also looked at DePaul, Loyola, Pepperdine, IU, and UIUC. It ultimately came down to money, but I am sure I would be happy at any of them. Ball State has completely exceeded my expectations.

As far as the other schools you mentioned, I think Miami is a great program. I know some people that are having a great time there. They seem to have a good balance of studying and going out.

If your daughter is even slightly interested in BSU I recommend filling out the Miller Scholar application. If she shows a strong interest in the program and actively pursues the opportunity, she may be surprised. My numbers weren’t as strong as some of the other students but I was able to show them that I had the potential to succeed in the program.
