Im from northern florida and was recently accepted to both BU and UF. Considering that cost is irrelevant, which school has a better academic reputation? Im going to be majoring in economics btw...

bumping this up

BU has a better academic reputation nationwide, assuming you mean Boston Unversity.

U Florida has a great reputation, and it's cheap!

Any ideas on where you want to settle and do after you graduate?

Dude, BU. There is no question about it. BU reputation is NATIONAL, not REGIONAl like UF. Plus, would you rather live in a great city (BOSTON) or in any very mediocre college town (GAINSVILLE) ?? I guess that it's up to you. I know a lot of people that are trying to transfer out of UF to BU and elsewhere. You better check this further.

my immediate plans following undergrad would be to attend a top shelf buissness school...is the general consesus that BU would help me more in this area?

btw, i justt rechecked the financial aid i received from both schools. I would end up having to pay about a thousand a year at uf and about nine thousand a year for BU.

OK..usual northern bias being displayed here. Despite some of the "expert" opinion you are getting above, the fact is, at a national level, Florida's undergrad programs and business programs are ranked higher than BU's. Factor in the cost. Factor in an amazing athletic program. In BU's favor, you've got Boston...but BU isn't exactly in the best area. And Gainesville is a great college town that many people would prefer anyway. You are going to have to decide if the allure of Boston offsets the advantages of UF....but if you believe BU's is the better choice academically, you would be mistaken.

The OP asked about Economics. According to this list, Boston University is #21 and University of Florida is #41.
NRC Rankings in Economics

Not that rankings mean much, and those rankings are old. But just to say that it is "northern bias" to suggest that Boston University has a better national academic reputation than University of Florida is, I think, a bit of southern bias. :-)

Interesting that being born and raised in Massachusetts and attending grad school in Boston would give me a southern bias. Thank you for the NRC rankings, however, as I was unaware of them. Even so, USNews has UF as the higher ranked overall national university. Additionally, both the undergrad and grad rankings for business are higher at UF. To ignore that fact and imply that BU is better academically...as you did....could be interpreted as at least a little biased.

Honestly, the real bias is that a guy like me would think that someone from Northern Florida would be crazy not to go off to school in Boston, if finances allowed, rather than stay in Florida for college.

This is why I asked where the OP has an interest in settling after graduation.

IF it's Florida and the South, UF has a good reputation and will be widely recruited by southern businesses. The plus for UF is that it's dirt cheap.

IF it's the Northeast, BU has a good reputation and will be widely recruited by northeastern businesses.

If I were the OP, I would choose UF in a heartbeat.
Great reputation, big time college sports, bargain price, and the best university in Florida. Why go to an overpriced private university in Boston that is at least 5th or 6th best in that area?
