BU School Of Communication or Newhouse at Syr

I am down to four schools-Rutgers, UMD, BU, and Syr. However, BU and Syr both have really good school’s of communications. Which one is better?

i’m specifically interested in television and film

post this question in threads for the other schools. most of us only know about bu and can really just say that it has a great com school, and being in boston gives wonderful opportunities for internships. my friend was in screenwriting and film and got an internship and nick jr and is doing “study abroad” in la.

Newhouse is far better, and i am from Boston, the rep is really good at newhouse, but its ur choice

i second Newhouse is better. one of the top 3 in the entire country

Whoa! BU has a film / tv production program and Syracuse is really not that. They have a film/tv/radio major that’s mostly communications / media stuff and with more limited options. If you want to be a broadcaster, that’s where Syracuse’s reputation sits, particularly in sports. If you want to make things, then BU is one of the top programs and does stuff that Syracuse does not.

does anyone know what the film program is like at bu

I know what the film program is like. What is your question? What is your interest?

how does a communications film major differ from a performing arts one…what kind of film is discussed (narrative/documentary)…what other schools did you apply to and why did you chose bu…how do the newhouse and bu film majors differ

You need to do some actual research, which you can do on the websites.

BU offers a film or tv production major, meaning you make films or tv programs and take classes in that. It’s a cross between a liberal arts program - meaning you take other classes in COM and classes outside COM - and a fine arts program (like Tisch at NYU). If you’re interested in broadcasting as performance, I believe Newhouse has an actual major in that but they don’t seem to offer a real production major. You could learn more from the websites.

BU has one of the best production majors in the country. BU also offers two other tracks, criticism (film studies) and writing (as in writing for TV or writing for film).

Lergnom is correct; the actual “production” of film at SU is technically in VPA (Visual and Performing Arts), although Newhouse students do take production courses in TRF (television, radio and film) and enter the field of TV and film production in large numbers…

there is definitely some overlap…

Yeah, Newhouse is well-regarded for Journalism – NOT film and television (though their department is pretty good). If you were a journalism major, I’d advise you to go to Syracuse. Otherwise, going to BU is probably better, as you’d be in a major city instead of… Syracuse, NY. Academic-wise, after all, BU and Syracuse are about on par.

I was accepted to both for the same program and had a difficult time choosing between the two. In the end I chose BU. The location of Boston seems really conducive to studying journalism as it’s very urban. Also, I was really impressed with the number of intern opportunities that BU has as opposed to Syracuse. The academics at BU were what drove my decision, but BU also offered me a far better fin aid package which really sealed the deal for me.

Both are extraordinary communication schools. I would recommend visiting both and taking everything into account before making a choice. I would encourage people to keep in mind that Syracuse’s location isn’t necessarily the ideal college town.
