Syracuse Newhouse School vs. BU College of Communication

Hi all,
I have been accepted to both these institutions for film production. They’re both around the same cost. I’m more concerned about which program is better. Syracuse is located in NY, and I figure there would be a lot of internship opportunities and work experience available. Their post-grads also have a good rate of getting a job. However, BU has the prestige and a lot of connections and internships available as well, though it is located in Boston. Which one is better, academically and in terms of post-grad job rate?

Distance to Manhattan should not be a factor, since Boston is closer to Manhattan than Syracuse is!

The schools are academically equal and prestigious for communications. Go with fit and cost.

I would go with Newhouse for communications.

@suzyQ7 thank youu for the help

@happy1 is it better than BU’s COM?

I’m in COM at BU and I love it! the professors are amazing people who actually work in the field and are super passionate about what they do. plus being in Boston gives you way more internship opportunities than Syracuse would give you since its in upstate New York. If you have any questions about BU/COM in general feel free to ask

@laurrodes Thanks for the reply. How are the classes? Do you get a lot of hands-on work? Have you gotten any internships? I am an international student, and I’m concerned about my academic adjustment; thus, if I’m not in, say, the top ten percent of my class, would this affect my internship opportunities in any way? I’m generally an A+ student, but I think the prestige and academic excellence of the university is freaking me out. That’s why Syracuse seemed like a more appropriate fit, but BU is still at the top of my list.

BU is NOT on par with Syracuse’s Newhouse! Syracuse is one of the best programs of its kind; its journalism program is among the very best in the country, the connections are amazing. BU is nowhere near Syracuse in prestige or selectivity. I don’t know specifically what your interests are, but if they’re in journalism, PR, print or TV it’s a no brainer. Syracuse is the place to go.

@Kellie123 have you visited either school? They’re extremely different! BU is very much a city school and Syracuse is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I love the COM department at BU. It depends on what you want to go into for a concentration, I am going into PR. There are a lot of awesome opportunities given to you by the school such as clubs like PRSSA and i would also recommend you look up PRlab or ADlab if you plan on going into PR or advertising as they are great programs! Our film&tv program is also world renounced and we have a hollywood internship opportunity senior year instead of taking classes! There are tons of international students at BU and they seem to be doing well. BU opens doors for you on job applications. I am only a freshman so I haven’t gotten any yet but I am certain i will in the future

@Kellie123…My daughter is a junior at SU in Newhouse and Whitman. She loves it. You have two great choices. As for SU, the Advertising program at Newhouse is rated as a top 5 program by IAB, Interactive Advertising Bureau. The Broadcast Journalism and TRF programs are world class. Newhouse students earn a lot of NYC internships. Semester programs in LA and NYC are very popular. My daughter will be working in New York City this summer.
BU also has excellent programs. Two wonderful choices and two very different campuses. SU offers a traditional campus with a lot of school spirit. BU is a city campus with Boston as the backdrop. I would suggest visiting both schools. You will know which school fits you. Good luck with your college decision.

SU does have a large international population, 13% of the student body. Again, good luck with your final decision. You can’t make a bad choice.

@katliamom I plan on doing Television, Radio and Film at Newhouse. Do you happen to have any personal experience at the school? If so, I would really like to hear about what it was like.

@laurrodes No, I haven’t had the opportunity to visit either one as yet. Thank you so much for the information!

@funfatdaddy Thank you for the help. Do you happen to know what her curriculum is like at Newhouse? Is it more hands-on? How are the resources and equipment?

@Kellie123…Newhouse is very hands on. My daughter is studying Advertising and guest lecturers from the best NYC firms seem to be at Newhouse either every week or every other week. Many of her Advertising professors were rainmakers in the industry, ran offices, and managed the largest Fortune 100 clients. The Newhouse faculty all have major industry experience. My daughter’s Newhouse advisor and freshman Communications professor has produced Indie films and edited a number of famous Spike Lee movies. Danny Zucker who produces Modern Family and Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter, are SU grads. The semester in LA for Newhouse TRF students is fantastic. Again, you have great choices. God luck with your decision.

@kelli123 I have no personal experience with Newhouse… but I worked in television journalism for years, and met many grads. In that field there are a few schools that dominate: Missouri, Northwestern, Syracuse, USC, Columbia grad program. BU isn’t one of the dominant schools in the field, not even close. I’m not saying it’s a bad program, but as far as TV journalism goes, it’s not anywhere near the top.

@Kellie123 …In answer to your last question the equipment at Newhouse is state of the art. The Dick Clark Studios are a year old and equipped like professional studios. My daughter has friends that interned at some large metro tv stations and they were surprised how much more updated the equipment was at Newhouse. As a Newhouse student you have 24 hour access to many of the Newhouse facilities.

@funfatdaddy @katliamom Thank you sooo muchhh for the help! Much appreciated! Syracuse is definitely much higher in my opinion now
