BU VS. BC VS. Northeastern

i must agree with diontechristmas regarding the name a school has outside mass. i tell people i go to boston university, and they're like "oh! isn't elie wiesel a professor there?" whereas if we talk about the beanpot they're like "who's northeastern? i get bu, bc, and harvard, but is northeastern that chicago school?" northeastern vs. bu is not really any contest for international recognition, and don't forget that some of these "foreign representatives" a school has include people like me who have dual citizenship in the U.S. as well as another country. i would only put northeastern above bu in regards to the co-op, but as a person with a sister at drexel, i know that co-op programs (and business majors in genereal) are going to suffer because of the economy for the next couple years.

"A bad alumni giving rate does not mean awful alumni networks..."

To some extent, it does. Why don't the alimni give? Certainly not because they feel their sucess to be the product of attending BU.

alright here's the thing I really don't have to waste time arguing over which school is better.
I've been accepted to BU, Northeastern, Syracuse, UT, Ohio State, Penn State so if I wanted 'global name recoignition' I'd pick any of those
Right now I'm deciding between Northeastern and Syracuse
I'm picking the one which I feel I'll get the best education and experience out of
See this is one of the problems I have with BU its students are so pretentious and think they're an elite school when honestly they are far from it
aliangel the people you hang out with seem to be ignorant of universities in general and it wouldn't surprise if they thought UPENN was in California
because I live in Houston and when I told people I was accepted to Northeastern they knew exactly which university I was reffering too
when I told people I was accepted to BU they said oh uh..thats cool....because half the US can easily get into BU...see most people consider BU a back up university
the general perception of BU is that its full of spoilt rich kids whose daddies literally bought them an admissions ticket
The only reason I applied to BU was because its in Boston
Thank you guys for helping me realize that BU is DEFINITELY not the school for me thank god I got accepted into Northeastern (which btw has a 34% acceptance rate compared to BU's 55% and does have to lie in the shadows of a better school i.e. BC)
It also has a superior ranking in Business (and even though you BU business majors consider it rubbish only because your so lowly ranked....to the rest of the US the rankings are a huge significance)
and it actually HAS a campus unlike BU which seems more like a row of boring old office buildings
Also it doesn't half of its freshman class complaining about how **** the school is but only 15% of them manage to transfer out
oh and btw ..... sucks to BU

Amen. I visited BU a couple of months back, and I know EXACTLY what you mean.

well im very glad that you found the school you want to go to, red glory. and im glad that you decided bu is not the school for you. see, we bu students post in this forum to help all of you by giving our honest opinions. and now that you've heard what we have to say and don't like it, you can stop posting here because you are no longer affiliated with bu. if you look at my posting history i will admit bad things about bu. this is just my own experience, and if people in this forum don't realize that the information they're getting is subjective then they probably shouldn't be going on to higher education (with the exception of the purely factual information). when you all post "which is better, bu bc or ne?" and we've spent 4 years at bu and have gotten accepted into medical schools 2 years early, we are obviously going to sing bu's praises where they're due. so have a nice life at ne, sorry you guys lost everything in hockey btw, and if you don't want anyone's opinion from bu then STOP ASKING FOR IT.

oh and for zen: yes, i will say that bu's alumni giving rate is terrible. however many of bu's alumni continue on to be professors, give talks, etc. bcuz they do love their alma mater. the problem is that, as a private university, bu's tuition is absolutely ridiculous. after spending $360,000 on an education when im finally done with bu, why would i want to donate as an alumni? i could pay for half of the west tower renovation with what im giving them! i did, however, give $20.09 for my class of 2009 gift.

Yeah, it really sucks to be the only #1 seed alive, one win away from the championship, the top team in the country, one of the top 5 or 6 programs in NCAA history, with one of the top five greatest coaches in NCAA history.

Congratulations to Subway Co-op State College-Huntington Ave. Campus for reaching the Frozen Four once, and winning Hockey East once in their illustrious history. Hope Cronin's golf game is improving (it should, it's not like he makes the postseason consistently anyway). Enjoy moving back to the basement of Hockey East next year.

This thread has gotten so ridiculous. I was going to write a response to some of the posts above, but it would be pointless since everybody would just repeat over and over why XY sucks and YZ rules, so why bother.

I too find some of the posts to be silly but if a person is caught up in his or her personal rationalizations then molehills become mountains.

It's also sad that kids who grow up listening to marketing everywhere in every way and who are supposedly cynical about it still fall for it. Some schools market themselves aggressively and others don't and some schools work ratings systems and have PR firms and others don't. Sports is mostly for marketing. UConn is known why? Because you think UConn and connect the success of their basketball program to the school being a winner.

First of all, i would like to say that you are so blessed to have even gotten into those schools, they are all really good for business. I am studying business and I got rejected to NEU with a 3.9 (from fairfax county, that is very good), taking full IB/AP classes and excellent extra-curriculars . I am so jealous that you get to go there! Northeastern was my number one! But because of the co-op program, I would definitely chose NEU. Congratulations. Not to be nosy, but what are your stats? I was kind of shocked when I didn't get in...

BU is not 44 - JMU is 44. BU is somewhere in the 30s i believe.

BU is 43rd. Regardless, any ranking that has Wharton third and Villanova above Stern is clearly garbage.

This is so funny..., you can succeed wherever you go. In the end, it's all about what you do individually. Enjoy wherever you go, sheesh, it's really not that serious.

High school kids. Geez.

Get over this stuff. It's meaningless. Like 10 years from now someone's going to say "Wow! You went to Stern! I only went to Villanova!" That's NOT THE WAY IT WORKS.

Thank you, Lergnom. Exactly. there are people who will go to community colleges and be more successful then a person who goes to a "top school." It is all about what you do with what you have.

Unfortunately, BC does not pride it self on a sport no one really cares about. if I recall correctly, BC won the tournament last year to little fanfare. Also, I recall BU having a football team a while back, what happened to it?

These arguments in the end are very petty. No one will care about this a few years down the road. Clearly all the schools you have listed have good to excellent academics, but it's all about what you want to take out of your college experience. If you put the same amount of time and effort into your school work, you should be successful anywhere you go.

I wasn't aware BC was in this conversation. I was under the impression that the poster I quoted attends Northeastern. Regardless, of course BC doesn't pride itself on its hockey team, because the 'Superfans' are terrible fans.

And actually, people care about hockey, although unfortunately, ESPN dictates what people like or care about.

As far as BU's football team is concerned, it no longer exists.

diontechristmas: if you're referring to me I don't attend Northeastern (but its a definite possibility)
I've been accepted to both schools and a couple of others.......so this entire month will be decision time which is going to be tougher than I thought.

Right. I suggest you not attend BU nor Northeastern after the whole 'sucks to BU' statement.

Im going to be a little bias in this situation my brother attends NEU. I work on Wallstreet and i can safely say that i come across more Northeastern Students than BU students on the street. There are a couple NEU students actually interning now in my division and i am continuously impressed with the product. I’ve come across a few BC students. Carol has a solid reputation. If you want to go into business or work on wall street i highly recommend Northeastern or BC. BU is a great school i just personally do not come across any students from BU. I know NEU has an extremely strong alumni base which is the reason how these students get the chance to intern. FYI Goldman Sachs had 34 NEU interns throughout various departments and its larger at other Investment banks especially at Merrill. My brother is interning at Raytheon and NEU alums account for 1200 employees. They place extremely well.
