Can any current Buckman resident (or those familar with Buckman) assist me? I'm trying to find out location of rooms 110 through 115 range. Are they North facing (Univ Ave), South facing, East facing(Buckman Dr) or West facing(towards court yard). Room details are not available online. Location might make a differnece on wheter I pull the trigger on an AC unit. Thanks for any help.

It depends on your section. The hall is gender divided into sections (not floors… think of the building as a bread loaf and the sections being large slices) lettered A-E ( i think E? it might go to F), each section alternates boy, girl, boy, girl. The middle 3 sections have windows that face either East or West and not North or South. The northern most sections are A and B and the southern most sections are the last two letters. These 4 end sections (they form the corners of the building) have windows that either face South or East, South or West to the South and North or East, North or West to the North.

I have not lived in Buckman in a while… and I honestly cannot remember 100% but well enough to be sure about all of this. If I had to guess… 11X would be Section A, Floor 1, and windows facing one direction if X is even and the other if X is odd. Section A is definetly one of the sections to the North and when I lived there, it was a girls section.

In the end, it doesn’t matter at all which room you are assigned in Buckman. Get an air conditioner because the rooms are very small, the weather is very hot, and the circulation in the building is non-existant. All UF dorms are horrible but Buckman is one of the worst. However, the exterior actually looks kind of charming, esp at night, and the dorm is HANDS DOWN the best located in ALL of campus. Location, Location, Location.

There IS a central heater, however, and they blast that thing like no ones business during the “cold” months (in Florida) and never turn it off. I actually kept my AC on during the winter to ‘counter-act’ this heater because it was so strong.

No joke, look on craigslist because people sell these things for like 50-100 dollars when they are moving out of Buckman. If you can, swing by the dorm sometime this summer and post up a sign saying you are buying an AC unit and include your number/email and I guarantee you will get some offers. However, I have noticed the other day they are doing some major interior work on the floors in Buckman C and I do not know if people are living in the building this summer or not. Maybe Summer B.

There is seriously no excuse, the money you save choosing to live in this dorm more than makes up for the amount you spend on an AC. The day I moved in the heat was unbearable and after I got my AC put up, the room felt great… in fact I almost miss the circulation I felt from my little stand up unit that ventilated into the window. The only thing I don’t miss is how small the rooms are and sharing a bathroom.

Cheers,
Former Buckman Resident

110-118 are on the first floor of Buckman C and therefore the room window will either face east or west. Couldn’t walk in to know for sure, but just walked by the other minute and took a look.

Thanks mystifire… I figured an AC unit was the way to go. I realized Buckman was the oldest building on campus, but I heard a rumor the rooms were bigger. Oh well so much for that rumor. I agree with you on location, location, location. I’m really looking forward to being on the historical part of the campus, near dinning, gym, stadium, some classes, univeristy ave, etc., etc., etc.

I’m an out of state freshman and as a result was down the list when it came to picking dorms. Buckman was one of the few left. I’ll be down for Preview in July but was told we couldn’t see the dorms. Nonetheless I’ll be taking your advice on posting an AC wanted sign.

Thanks for the walk by and extra effort…that was really nice of you. I’m really excited and can’t wait to get started.

Slainte

one more observation… if 11X is still a girls sections they better get ready for a guy to join them. LOL.

Oh darn, well you definitely CAN look at whatever you want during downtime at Preview. Just let them know and do what you gotta do. Just leave and come back. Or go before or after. Preview is kind of a joke because they waste a lot of your time with Rah Rah Rah Go Gators Rah as if they need to impress you anymore when they already have your money and you are already set on going to the school. I think it is because they have so many parents come by. Just make sure you don’t miss your class registration and you are set. They will definitely treat you like you are an idiot and still in high school but just remind them that (if you are 18) you are an adult and can make adult decisions.

But yeah, I think Buckman is actually a great dorm choice for mature entering freshman. I came from a college prep school where I had lived in dorms for years so I was over the entire “yay!! away from home for the first time lets be loud, party, and socialize” before it even began. Buckman has a relatively large proportion of upperclassmen (because half the rooms are singles… actually quite spacious singles… and everyone realizes the value of its location only AFTER they arrive on campus) who are very chill and the RAs and residential area people do not bother you too much or expect a lot. Other areas are hugely into the “dorm spirit” type stuff but Buckman is definitely more settled, although there are some activities like that if you choose. Most students don’t even know where it is.

But the location is simple unbeatable. The only downside is it is not that close to dining halls or the campus stores but that is okay because it is still very walkable and you can eat a lot of different places on Univ Ave if you want. But you are literally a hop skip and a jump from the library and if you are Pre-Med the chemistry building is literally across the street. Its a really nice area to walk around, especially during the Fall… I was able to see Buckman drive every morning and it was cool to see the rush of bikes coming onto campus between 8-9 AM

Thanks mystifire. You’re right, ugh, dinning is a bit away. OK, time to lube up the bike or hit Dad up for a scooter or some new walks. Wouldn’t mind scoring one of those palatial singles next year. I hope to come in as a Sophmore with all my AP credits (we’ll see) and hit the ground running on getting a degree in 3 years (and) hopefully adding an extra degree in 4 years. Lots of classes will be in Little and Weil, so that helps being in Buckman. Was flirting with pre-med idea.

What are you majoring in or are you in grad school?

Thanks again for all the tips. Cheers
