Bugs

So my daughter lives in Columbia Hall - 3rd floor. She's had visits from "Palmetto bugs". She told the RA but she just said to keep the room/bathroom area cold and dry. Had anyone else heard this complaint? If so, what did you do about it? We don't like BUGSSSSSSS!!!

My son called the other day and asked us to get some Raid so he could take it back after fall break. He's on the 7th floor in Capstone (right next door to Capstone) and the Palmetto bugs are in his room, too. No luck on keeping the bathroom cold and dry --their shower drips constantly. I thought maybe the bugs were attracted to the trash cans in the kitchen area on their floor - but it sounds like they are in several dorms. Do they exterminate the dorms on a regular basis?

Typo--I meant Capstone is right next door to Columbia Hall. Who would be in charge of exterminating the dorms? Maintenance?

geeze...be sure to find out what kind of chemical they use, as your kids will be breathing it!

those Palmetto bugs are everywhere.I think its their season.S had them last year at Maxcy and has seen them at woodrow this year.
I think he said they used Raid last year on them. They are big and ugly but I dont think they are "roaches" per se.

They are roaches; I googled them. It's a tree roach, however, they do find their way indoors, especially in damp, warm spots.
The RA wasn't much help (what could she do, really?), so the girls went to get some Raid. Did your son see an end to these ugly creatures last year in either late fall or winter?

i'm having a memory! for years we vacationed in an awesome place, Kiawah Island, SC. all condos, etc were treated in between guests. i remember thinking as we came in that it was really strong stuff. Raid might not do it. can't you get the school to do something?

Well, if she already spoke to the RA, who might be next in line? I know she would follow through with it, I'm just not sure who she should go to next. Any thoughts?

I had awful dreams about bugs all night last night....AHHHHH!!

i'm not sure of your school's hierarchy, but what about the office of dean of students? don't stop at the level of the RA! or office of residential life?

OK, she submitted a maintenance report. Maybe that will help??

hope so! be sure to follow up, as things get "lost" ! how's the "red tape " at your school?

carol
yes he remembers them "going away" when it finally cooled off temp/rain wise. Its been drier and hotter than normal..maybe they are active looking for food and water.Yuck!!

Bugs are a fact of life in down south. Very common in college dorms. The combination must be bug haven.

My oldest was at a school in MD - freshman year they had cockroaches - disgusting. They had to spray the entire dorm during fall break.

Just an update. Daughter put in a maintenance request last night and the room was exterminated this morning! Hopefully, this will help. I was impressed with the timely request :)

Yaah! 10 Char

We were "bugged" by the same pests when we lived in Phoenix AZ... only there, the critters are known by the less poetic and possibly more fitting name of "sewer roaches."

We were told to pour bleach (undiluted) down our sink and tub drains to discourage them from entering via that route. Maybe some of you (or your kids) could try that.
