Ok so I have a dilemma going on here, and need some help please.
I'm going to be a senior in high school and have thought of taking a college class to get ahead a little bit.( I made up my mind that I am going through college first). So my dad wants me to try to get into Haas and I saw they have a lot of pre reqs and breathe courses that I need to take. Would it be a better idea to start taking classes for a economic major and apply to UCLA and UCB for economics. Or just take the chance and apply to UCB Haas. What do you guys think I should do? Plus I can finish 1 year early If i go the economics way, but not the business way.

It depends on what you want to do for a career. Business is very broad whereas economics is much more specific. While you pretty much aren't safe without a 4.0 for Haas (and even then you're not a shoe-in), keep in mind that economics is no easy major to get into for UCLA and UCB either (think 3.8 and above).

You said you're going to be going to college first. Are you talking about community college or a four-year?

Why would you only apply for one school and chance it? Just apply for both - all that this requires is a check-mark on the UC application, right?

If you complete the requirements for Haas you will have already completed all the requirements for an economics major. But if you only go an economics major then you will not complete the requirements for Haas. Because you are still undecided I would suggest just starting off with macro economics or a math class so that you have time to decide if you want to do business or economics without taking classes that you don"t need.

Actually, economics requires two years of calculus while Haas only requires one; this is a problem for me because I can't apply to econ for UCLA as I can only fit in one year of calculus into my schedule.

Berkeley, let alone any school, doesn't have a business major without an actual business school.

You shouldn't have too much trouble finishing your 60 units, IGETC, and prereqs in two years (especially if you take advantage of summer and winter sessions), but it's imperative that you place into the highest math class possible, or else you'll have to take a bunch of math classes before the ones you need for econ (Calculus 1 and 2).

Per year? 9-11 sounds about right for a full-time student. 3-4 during regular session (x2 = 6-8), 1-2 in the summer and 1-2 in the winter. Of course, this all depends on the student, his/her circumstances (work, ECs, whatever), and the type of classes being taken (a sociology class is likely to be less time-consuming than, say, OChem).

If you mean per semester, then yeah, 3-4 sounds about right.

Thanks for the reply! =]
I forgot that the classes are only one semester haha...so other than pre req classes your supposed to take some other classes too? (to transfer)

-Math (this shouldn't be a problem for you since your major requires Calculus)

-English (you are required to finish 2-3 college-level English classes)

-Social/Behavioral Sciences (you are required to take at least 3 of these. This is like Sociology, Psych, Econ, etc. Keep in mind that your pre-req Econ classes fulfill 2/3 of this requirement)

-Arts & Humanities (I believe that 3 classes is also required for this. This is like Art History, Literature, Philosophy, etc.)

-Physical Science (you MUST take this with a lab, otherwise it won't suffice as a General Ed. class)

-Biological Science (such as Bio, obviously)

-Foreign Language (requires completion of a 3rd-semester class in a language. You can either take 3 semesters of this, or place high on the placement test)

FYI, this is the jist of it at my school, PCC. Where do you plan on going?

And also, since I will be applying this fall, Berkeley is VERY picky about you being IGETC-certified and completing 60 units; that is, that you have finished the General Education sequence at your CC.

huh
haas doesn't give a rats arse about ur IGETC that i can guarantee u

UCLA might be a different story...

econ and biz is really quite different. if u really like biz then apply to USC as well.
if u wanna settle for a UC then sure go for UCLA.
and even if ur an econ major, wherever u go doesn't mean that u can't take biz courses >_>
then again it defeats the whole purpose of being in the major ur in aye

actually u know what...
if u can spare some time go visit haas. sneak into one of the lectures
then sneak into a lecture at UCLA - iono if u can do that cuz i don't go there
then u decide what kinda stuff u would enjoy learning
or what kind of teaching approach each school does...

Well thx for the reply's everybody! =]
Ok i got the whole IGETC thing but just one more question, to get into Haas they want me to take 7-9 breathe courses...do these classes fall into the IGETC thing or is it totally different?

if u complete the 9/9 breadth req it should have covered most of ur IGETC.
try to finish all 9. if u get admitted with only 7 done u still have to complete them at cal >_> trust me u don't wanna waste ur time

Ok ill try and thx for the post!
I heard that if you dont have a 4.0 gpa you most likely wont get it in...that really brings my hopes down, Cuz i just finished my first class and got a B...but I'm willing to put in the time and effort to get around a 3.8/3.9, plus I do have a couple EC's...so idk but anybody get into Haas that can bring my hopes up? =]

from my CC
2/3 of those who got admitted did not get a 4.0
i think there are more people who got in with a 3.9+ than a 4.0
3.8s are not that common, atleast i haven't heard of one
but the majority are 3.9s

Dang that means i got to get about all A's from know on haha =]
well im willing to try, plus i'm starting my senior year in high school with only 4 classes (enough to graduate) and 2 classes at my CC (precalc and into to buisness) after that im taking one more class my spring session...so ill be ahead by the time i got to college...cuz im gonna try to fulfill all haas req's and ucla econ. reqs...so yea wish me luck!
thx for all the helpfull reply's!
