Yep. frolik, being familiar with many many applicants in Sofia and other Bulgarian cities, I do know of several cases of people who deserve admission much less than some rejected do. And again, yes, I am quite sure there are Bulgarians admitted to terrific colleges who are below the general academic level of the international students at those colleges, while there are students with hardly believable achievements rejected everywhere.

The admission process is unfair, but it's all over. I won't say a word more on the matter. Being admitted to a school of MIT's or Princeton's or Amherst's or Stanford's caliber surely precedes an extraordinary experience. Furthermore, these unqualified applicants have done nothing wrong, so don't misunderstand me - I wish them a wonderful college experience - they'll probably have it anyway, so why be mean :).

Still, frolik, you yourself supported my thesis. An essay or a possibly made-up array of activities shouldn't be the thing to distinguish you from a pool of applicants with good SATs. If that's what the AdComs are looking for, well... that's a big minus of the US higher education system.

Finally, frolik, let's stop discussing this, because there is no way you could convince me of the fairness of the admission process. Also, I don't like being involved in ardent arguments and sounding like a grumpy, bitter old man when there is hardly any reason for doing so :) It doesn't matter any more.

well, i still dont agree that being admitted to one school may suggest you were unqualified, but OK, i don't want to go on either.

however you're right about cheating - i know of several people who applied early decision to 3 or more schools. I also know of a couple of girls who made up a students' magazine and claimed to have written articles and won a competition of that magazine. the first time they told me, i couldn't believe it. on the other hand, let's not think that everyone cheats. :) i don't, you probably don't, most of the other applicants who i know don't cheat either. just thought i'd share :)

mariela, i qould like to extend my congrats too:P

it is really a tough choice, isn't it?

well, i guess it depends very much on what you would like to major in. for example, if it is math, i would suggest harvard; if it is something more liberal - international relations for ex., i would say yale. yet, if it is business or law - definitely harvard.

dacutewabbit and pavalon, thanks for your input guys!

I plan to major in political science/international relations. This fact does not make my choice easier because the program is top notch at both schools. So I'll have to make my decision based on other factors.

Pavalon, before answering your question let me congratulate you on getting into Princeton. I have a Bulgarian friend there who constantly tells how AWESOME Princeton is!!! I am sure you will have the time of your life there.
As to my reasons...I know it may sound somewhat unfair (and I feel really bad about that), but the main reason because of which I eliminated P is fin aid. Not that they didn't give me a generous fin aid package, but the one form H and Y is much better...I want to place the least fin aid burden on my family.

So I will continue to bang my head between H and Y...at least for the next 2 weeks...

mariela, it must be really hard to choose between some of the best universities. I think that you can't be wrong, whatever you decide. Good Luck!

I totally understand: Princeton asked for a bit to much from my family (my brother studies in france, where no fa is available, and my parents plan to build a house during the next years - i don't want to be another financial hardship). I wrote them (Princeton ppl) a letter explaining the situation and i'm waiting for some kind of answer right now. My point is that you should not feel at all bad about this reason for ultimately choosing between H and Y.

From what i read in the "Harvard or Yale? Any advice will be much appreciated!" thread, i have to tell you that i was pretty much convinced about Y :D. I am curious if you've reached any conclusion by now?

hi mirela! Congrats! And you choose a great place, i hope, and it chose you too, so everything's gonna be just... incredibly... oh! i'm so excited :D

I got in ED, so it's not like i had a choice :p. joking... Seriously, i sent in my card back in january;
and guess what? i just got a letter from P tonight saying that they've changed the award to what i wanted :D:D:D... Quite happy now, as my proud and ethical parents said that the difference will become my allowance money... ;)

pavalon, i wish you and mirela a great time at Princeton.

As for me, I have not reached a firm decision yet, although I am leaning towards one of them...I just need a few more days to ponder over the reasons that prevent me from making a final decision.

Ok lord of the rings.
Atanas: however, I want to study computer science, and finding a job in germany would be very hard, only after 7-8 years after joining EU would be freely able to get a job in EU countries. Also, after graduating in germany would getting a visa for work in US almost impossible.

"i enrolled at mount holyoke college"
cool, do you know what the distance is between Mt Holyoke and Amherst?
btw, i think a girl from my school enrolled at MtH as well :)

plus, it's not that far from boston (1h 1/2):P
frolik, yes i know it is about45min with the shuttle and about 20-30 min with a car. that is one of the reasons i enrolled
what is the name of the girl from your school? i know there are 8 bulgarian girls admitted this year and as far as i know we are all going...
