Burglary

Do they occur at a higher than expected level?

For bikes, yes! You just need to watch your stuff carefully. Thieves hang out at places like the gym, where students tend to leave their valuables sitting out. And if you have a car, for pete’s sake don’t leave valuable things in clear view!

How about the dorm rooms?

Or, are there cameras and deterents of such?

I remember reading about a few incidents of car burglary during the year. Do NOT leave valuable things in your car, especially not in clear view and of course lock your doors and keep your windows rolled up.

Theft is a HUGE problem in the library and pretty much on any given day you can read about someone having x-expensive-item stolen at the PCL - same for Gregory (the gym). If you’re in the library don’t even think about leaving your things unattended even for a few minutes while you step away to go to the bathroom, or, if you have to, ask someone to watch your stuff. There are crazy people out there that just steal whole backpacks and of course the target items like iPhones and laptops. Also, bikes get stolen daily so if you bring a bike, honestly, there’s a high chance it’ll get stolen especially if not locked properly. Police catch people in the act pretty often and it’s usually not UT students.

I don’t think dorm burglary is a huge problem, but nonetheless always always lock your doors when you go to sleep or leave the room. I remember reading about one incident in Jester where a girl woke up to a stranger standing in her room over her bed, but I think he was drunk, not a burglar.

There are cameras and most of the dorms have good security - i.e. front desks with RAs staffed 24/7 and mandatory card-swiping/checking in after a certain hour.

Thanks for the info

This was from today’s UT police report:

A black Jansport backpack containing a Dell laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unattended on top of a chair inside the lobby [of the business building]. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had turned his back to talk to his advisor and returned to discover his backpack and computer gone. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 06-15-11, at 10:00 AM.

So you have to be careful!
