Bus Services

Is there a shuttle or city bus service from campus to the KOMU tv station? We are from Oregon and my daughter won't have a car but will be needing to go to KOMU once in awhile.

Here’s a link to Columbia’s transit system: Transportation[/url”>http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/PublicWorks/Transportation/]Transportation It looks like there’s a bus line that goes out Highway 63, but it doesn’t appear to go as far as KOMU. The university doesn’t have its own shuttle bus service. They contract with the city. You might check with the j-school to find out how students get there if they don’t have cars.

My son did not find the bus service to be that great. There have been cutbacks in service this year, though I know the university is working with them to come up with a better solution. He did not have a car until second semester of junior year. Thinking back, he really could have used one before that. Coming from an urban environment where we use public transportation all the time, it was a bit of an adjustment.

Don’t rely on it :frowning: Once your D. starts taking Broadcast-2 class she will need a car; it’s usually junior year; so for first two years she can survive without her own car, but then it’s practically impossible to complete all class assignments let alone to do shifts on TV station. During this year my D. had shifts: 2am - 9am; 1pm - 1am; 5am-9am, etc…

She is also out of state (CA); and we didn’t plan to provide her with a car there, since she spends all her vacations at home; and she needs her car more in CA than in MO, but when she started to take B-2 class she sent us a long email-essay “Why I desperately need a car in Columbia”, Of course she suggested us to help her to buy a used car there ( " for about $500, some my friends did it and still driving them" :-); we did not like that idea; and finally we came to the decision to send her car from CA.

It is even easier to get to class with a car when you live off campus, which most of them do after freshman year. Mizzou is not a green campus when it comes to transportation. (But there’s a lot to love about it!)

But be aware that there are no free parking on campus; my D. was told about “some places where it’s ok to park with no permit”, then I got a bill:

I think a semester permit would cost less :-)

^^ You’re right! Those campus cops keep pretty busy.

Thank you very much for all of the responses! I think after this year we will try to get her car out there, or buy one there. Her roommate will have a car this year and they both are Walter Williams with broadcasting intentions so it will help. :)
