A question for OOS students: How do you get to and from the St. Louis airport? I found an airport bus online. It's expensive, but we'll do it if we have to. Does the university arrange any lower-cost charter bus service around break times? My nephew is at a large midwestern school where they do this, and it makes sense.

Kansas City doesn't make sense for us because there are no nonstop flights home.

We can use either airport, STL or KC, and both seem to have bus service. I was hoping someone with experience could give us some practical info.

I am an expert on this! We live in Dallas area and my daughter has come home many ways. There is an airport shuttle MoExpress that goes door to door from Columbia to either airport. Cost is around $42 each way. However, there are so many kids from the St. Louis area, my d only rode the shuttle once. She always seems to find someone going that way to drop her off at holiday time. She also seems to have no problem finding someone to pick her up when she lands back in STL again! I assume the same can be said for KC, but SL is actually a little closer and easier to get to and better flights for us. She has also shared gas/parking costs with other kids from DFW leave their cars at the airport. Also, depending upon where you live, there are always kids driving home that are thankful to share the ride and gas money! The airport has NEVER been a problem for us!

one more thing, geezermom. Her first Thanksgiving she could not get out of her late Friday class before Thanksgiving in time for the last flight to Dallas. She lived in Twain, which officially closed at 6 pm. that night. She got permission to stay that night(the PA's were still there)and then she took the shuttle to the airport early Sat. I thought that was very accomodating of them! Mizzou people are really nice!

I was telling geezermom privately that we had a few snags with signing up for housing and every call to Mizzou was returned quickly and the people we spoke with were all very friendly and helpful. I was dreading dealing with the bureaucracy of a large state school, but was very impressed with the efficiency and eagerness to help us solve our problems. They were actually a pleasure to deal with and everything was resolved painlessly.

How did your d like Twain? The engineering FIGS are housed in Twain and Wolpers. S chose Wolpers near the Rec Center but has considered Twain. I wish we had looked at these specific dorms when we were there, although he is not very fussy at all and I'm sure anywhere with a bed will do.

My d LOVED Twain, but a big disadvantage is the location. She was lucky enough to get a room on the opposite side of the smokestacks, but it is fairly isolated on the west(?)end of campus. She had many friends in the Wolpers/shurz dorm area and it was always a hike to get together. And she would have liked to be closer to the rec center. Otherwise, the kids were all top notch and she loved her time there! She is abroad now and had some scheduling issues for next semester which were handled quickly by people at Mizzou. Again, I feel they really take the best care of the kids and truly care about them.

Glad to read yet another thread singing Mizzou's praises.

I am a graduate student at Mizzou and am looking to ride with someone who is going to the airport this Friday November 16th. I need to be at the airport by 4:30 PM, and I am happy to chip in for gas. Please let me know via email if you would like to carpool. Thanks.

Door to Door MoExpress prices went up during last four years: $53 - one way, $96 - round trip. Since Columbia is located between STL and MCI airports I’m buying air tickets based on convenient day/time/ direct flight / price from/to SFO. Yes, it’s expensive; especially if you compare with average RT air ticket that is about $250.
My D. has a lot of friends, but majority of them live not near STL or MCI and she doesn’t feel comfortable to ask them to give her a ride, since as a rule they have plans to drive home on other day or time.
My tip: when you book a first MoExpress trip register on their website to start gaining points; for each one way trip you will get 1 point, once you have 6 points you can book one way for free from their Columbia station. At least every 7th time she asked somebody to give her a ride to the station; it’s only 1-3 miles from any place there. It’s ok with everybody
First year she came home 4 times: Thanksgiving, Winter break, Spring break and Summer; then she joined ASB ( alternative Spring break) program and loved it! During Spring break groups of students are driving to different States to do some community ( environment, poverty, ets… ) work. So she visited us three times a year.

My D is auditioning at Mizzou in February and we are flying from Chicago straight to Columbia - the ticket price was not much higher than flying from Chicago to St. Louis. BUT I haven’t figured out how to get from the airport to the hotel (the hotel does not have a shuttle to and from the airport - I was bummed about that - but I picked it because it’s within walking distance to the Fine Arts building and I didn’t want to rent a car). Any ideas of how to get from the Columbia Regional Airport to our hotel?

There’s taxi service from the airport. Is this your D’s first visit to Mizzou and Columbia? Though downtown and the campus are walkable, you might want to rent a car so you can see more of the city. It can also be bitter cold and not great walking weather in February, but this might not bother you since you’re from Chicago!

Geezermom, I’m actually from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is even colder than Chicago! So yes, I’m used to walking around in the winter. We actually know someone who goes to school at Mizzou, so my hope is that she will drive us around and give us a little tour. I’m not sure she’ll be available to pick us up at the airport, though. Do I need to arrange for a taxi before I leave Michigan or is it something we can just do when we get to the airport?

Sounds like a good plan. You might want to check on the airport’s website to see exactly what the taxi situation is. I’m sure it’ll tell you whether you need to arrange it in advance. I’ve only flown into and out of Columbia once, and as far as I remember we had a rental car.
