My daughter is thinking of going to UC Santa Barbara next fall. She would not have a car. Is there any convenient public transportation that takes students from campus to downtown Santa Barbara?

I took a tour at UCSB and everything is really accesible. IV is in walking/biking distance, and there are school bus rides downtown all of the time. This is the one school where having a car is useless.

I wouldn't live downtown without a car. Taking a bus is fine during the day, but there's not service for those late nights at the library. What SoCal said is true if you live in IV (something I would highly recommend).

I am currently a freshman and do not have a car. I take the bus to downtown all the time. It's very easy.

My daughter has been accepted for next fall and will not have a car. What kinds of things can you do in downtown Santa Barbara? How late do the buses run? Do they go right to campus? Do ever go alone at night? Also, do you feel safe walking around campus at night? Finally, what are you studying and what have your class sizes been like? My daughter's interested in English and Spanish. Thanks!

fiskelove: I go downtown for the shopping and great food. The buses I think run til about 10ish and they come right onto campus. UCSB is a safe campus, but as a rule I rarely go out alone at night. I am a Chem Engineer major and most of my class sizes have been large.

Dunno why people aren't mentioning it, but there's an express bus (24x) that runs between downtown and campus about every hour and half hour during peak times.

Downtown is fun, i haven taken the bus a few times to get thee asnd it was very easy. These is alot of good food (on the expensive side) shopping and other events....we go down to the movies and out to eat quite often. The campus is really safe, its IV that coudl potentially be a danger but as long as you go out with a group of friends you should be fine, no one in my group has had any problems. I am a pre-dental/biz-econ major. My classes have been failry big average 400 kids. But it is really not that bad, professors and TA make themselves very accessibble, if you want inidivdual attention you can easily get it.
