I am applying to colleges and I’m unsure on what to major in. My main goal is to eventually become a dentist. I know that dental school is very competitive and at this point I am unsure what to major in. Majoring in Biology seems right for dental school since it takes care of all the pre req’s but I can’t predict the future and know for sure if I will get in, so thats why I am questioning wether to major in some sort of Administration. This would allow me to learn how to manage staff just like I would be running my practice and also something to fall back on if i don’t get accepted into a dental school. What are your opinions?
You are free to choose whatever major you want, as long as you complete the prereqs. It is true that biology covers most if not all of the prereqs for you, but do you really love biology enough to study it in great depth? Or is there something else you are interested in? Dental schools want to see that you are majoring in something because you really have the desire to, not because you feel as if you ought to.
Yes, it is smart to come up with a plan B right from the beginning (i.e., now), not after you get rejected from all dental schools after applying. You should major in a field where you would be happy working in should dental school not work out.
